Former Texas A&M quarterback Jaylen Henderson will transfer to play for West Virginia in the 2025 season, he announced Saturday via X. He spent the first two seasons of his career at Fresno State before transferring the College Station ahead of 2023.

Henderson appeared in five games for the Aggies that season to record eight total touchdowns, 715 yards passing and 104 yards rushing. However, he did not play this past season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

As a recruit, Henderson was a three-star prospect out of Chaminade (CA) High School in 2021. He ranked as the No. 1,030 overall player and No. 74 quarterback in the cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Henderson would go on to play five games for Fresno State over the next two years, spending all of his time there as a backup before transferring to Texas A&M. As a transfer in this cycle, he ranks as the No. 1,329 overall player and No. 107 quarterback according to On3’s Transfer Portal Player Rankings.

Jaylen Henderson is only the fifth transfer addition for West Virginia and the first quarterback that it has added through the portal. The Mountaineers are set to lose starter Garrett Greene, who exhausted his final year of eligibility this season, so will have a new face under center in 2025.

Returners Nicco Marchiol and Jackson Crist, as well as incoming freshman Scotty Fox, will compete with Henderson for the starting job in the spring and fall.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024 and closed on Dec. 28. However,  players on teams still playing in the postseason will get an additional five-day window to enter the portal after their seasons end.

More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers.

So far this cycle, 2,452 players have entered the transfer portal with 896 of those already having committed to new schools.
