West Virginia’s Tucker DeVries will not return this season for the Mountaineers.

Per Jon Rothstein, DeVries will have season-ending surgery on his shoulder tomorrow.

“Source: West Virginia’s Tucker DeVries will have season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday,” Rothstein tweeted on Tuesday. “Significant Big 12 News.”

With this being DeVries’ senior season, there’s not yet news of if he’d consider a medical redshirt with this injury happening when it did.

DeVries appeared in just eight games this season for the Mountaineers. He played in the non-conference into the Battle 4 Atlantis and Big 12-Big East Battle before this injury came up in mid-December. At that point, he was ruled out indefinitely but now, a month and a half later, it will officially cost him the remainder of his season at WVU.

DeVries came into this season one of the best players in college basketball as a vote-getter as an AP Preseason All-American. He is also under consideration as a potential selection in the 2025 NBA Draft.

DeVries transferred to Morgantown for this season to play for his dad, Darian DeVries, after both left Drake. He did so as the No. 2 SF and the No. 5 overall transfer per On3’s 2024 Top Transfer Portal Players.

In his collegiate career, DeVries has averaged 17.7 points (43.5% FG, 36.7% 3PT), 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals. That includes 14.9 points (41.2% FG, 47.3% 3PT), 4.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.5 blocks in his few outings this year for the Mountaineers.

Since his injury, West Virginia has gone 8-5, including 5-5 in the Big 12, to be 14-7 overall currently in their debut season under DeVries. That has them in the field for the moment for the 2025 NCAA Tournament with ESPN’s Joe Lunardi having them as a No. 9 seed while On3’s James Fletcher has them on the bubble as a No. 11 seed that’ll have to play in the First Four.

While unfortunate to not be getting DeVries, their huge offseason addition, back at all, West Virginia can now fully focus on getting the team that they do have into the bracket over the next month.
