West Virginia had to deal with a number of serious injuries on Saturday evening in their matchup with the TCU Horned Frogs. In addition to safety Aubrey Burks, the Mountaineers also had to deal with a lower leg injury to linebacker Trey Lathan.

He stayed in Fort Worth overnight in the hospital. On Sunday afternoon, WVU announced that the 6-foot-1, 225-pounder had successful surgery on his lower leg.

Check out the update below.

“Trey Lathan had successful surgery on his lower leg this morning. He will continue to recover and be monitored at the hospital in Fort Worth this evening,” the release from West Virginia football read.

Lathan joined West Virginia in 2022, playing in four games during his freshman season. He finished with six total tackles, including a season-high of four tackles against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The 225-pound linebacker also played against Towson and Oklahoma State.

He played his high school football with Gulliver Prep (Miami, Florida). He helped lead the Raiders to a 9-2 overall finish in 2021, punching his team’s ticket to the 4A state regional final. His senior year there, he racked up 53 tackles, three sacks, seven tackles for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Lathan also tacked on two offensive touchdowns his senior year, too.

West Virginia pulled out the win in Saturday night’s game against TCU, 24-21. The Mountaineers rolled up over 200 total rushing yards, gashing the Horned Frogs’ defense all night long on the ground. WVU took a 24-21 lead on a 49-yard field goal by Michael Haynes with 9:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After being whipped by a very talented Penn State team 38-15, West Virginia rattled off three straight wins. They barely survived against Texas Tech, 20-13. The Mountaineers needed a fourth-down stop on their own 12-yard line with 23 seconds left in the game to prevail against the Red Raiders.

West Virginia will face one of their toughest opponents of the season on Saturday, November 11th, as they face off against the Oklahoma Sooners in their final year in the Big 12 Conference.

Up next for the Mountaineers, they’ll face off against the Houston Cougars on October 12th. The game will be played in Houston and kickoff is set for 7:00 PM EST.

With the win on Saturday, West Virginia moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12.
