West Virginia coach Randy Mazey reacts to homerun during mid-game interview
The broadcast team may have trouble taking the headset off West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey. In the top of the third inning of WVU’s Game 1 against North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional, WVU junior Kyle West crushed a solo home run as soon as Mazey began his in-game interview.
The massive shot to left field gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead over the Tar Heels. Mazey had a hilarious reaction to the tide-turning play.

“Good luck getting rid of me now, boys,” Mazey said with a chuckle. “We’re such a better team when I’m not down on that other end of the dugout. It’s amazing.
“That’s the guy, KP, I told you about yesterday. He’s one of our revolving designated hitters. We just try and match up his swing with the pitcher on the mound. Man, it sure made me look like a good coach right there.”
Randy Mazey hasn’t hesitated to show off his coaching chops this season. The Mountaineers entered Friday’s game with a 36-22 overall record and a 19-11 mark in conference play. Further, this is the first season in program history the Mountaineers have reached the NCAA Tournament Super Regionals.
To advance to the Chapel Hill Super Regionals, WVU defeated Dallas Baptist and then took down Grand Canyon in back-to-back games. Now, the Mountaineers will look to take another step forward as they square off against the Tar Heels.
