West Virginia QB Garrett Greene leaves game after hit to head, play reviewed for targeting

West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene just left the Mountaineers’ game against Oklahoma State after taking a shot to the head on a tackle. The Cowboy defender collided head on with Greene, who was engaged as a ball carrier and had also lowered his head. The two helmets clashed and Green spun back and into the arms of another OSU defender, who eventually brought him to the ground.
After the hit, Greene had to be helped up and off the field by West Virginia staffers and was led to the locker room, likely to be evaluated for a concussion.

Following Greene’s injury, officials reviewed the play for targeting but ultimately moved on, deciding that there was no intent by the defender to head Greene helmet to helmet, even though that’s how the tackle played out. Greene was also a ball carrier in this situation and not merely a sitting duck as a quarterback in the pocket. Since he was already run head-down into the collision as a ball carrier, officials opted not to punish the tackler.
Unfortunate series of events for Garrett Greene and Mountaineers. However, they were able to turn their luck around on that same drive, as JT Daniels replaced Greene and completed a six-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by a 56-yard touchdown run for Jaylen Anderson.
