West Virginia releases statement on Bob Huggins arrest
West Virginia men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins was arrested Friday evening for DUI on Friday evening while in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Reports say he was released and must sit for a court hearing on a later date. Meanwhile, the university has released a statement regarding the incident, which Jon Rothstein reported to Twitter. It read:
“West Virginia University is aware of an incident last night involving Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Huggins, for which he was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) in the City of Pittsburgh. We are gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete.”
Details on Huggins arrest
Jeff Jenkins of MetroNews reported the following details of his arrest:
“According to information from Pittsburgh police, Huggins was driving a black SUV at around 8:30 p.m. on Merchant Street off of Ridge Avenue when officers observed the vehicle in the middle of the road blocking traffic. Police said the driver’s side door was open and the vehicle had a flat and shredded tire.”
Per Jenkins, The police report stated:
“Officers directed the male driver on how best to move off the road so they could help with the flat tire. When they observed him having difficulty maneuvering the SUV to allow vehicles to pass, they activated their lights to pull him over. Upon questioning, officers had strong suspicion to believe the male was intoxicated. They asked him to exit the vehicle to perform standard field sobriety tests, which he failed. The male was placed in custody without incident and transported for further testing.”

The longtime college hoops coach is 69 years old and about to enter his 17th season as the leader of the Mountaineers’ men’s program, for which he’s had a great deal of success. For this coming year, WVU is packed to the gills with talent both homegrown and from the portal, making for one of the more talented rosters Huggins has had in M-Town.
Now, the question is whether he’ll even get to coach them after embroiling himself in multiple troubling incidents off the court this offseason, the latest of which being this DUI arrest. The future is dicey for WVU hoops. After saying slurs on live radio a couple months back, this issue is even more damning for the WVU coach. You have to wonder if his time as a head coach may be coming to an end.
