West Virginia starting tackle Wyatt Milum helped off field with leg injury
The situation appears to be getting worse for the West Virginia Mountaineers. While trailing on the road to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, West Virginia saw one of their starting offensive linemen, Wyatt Milum needing to be helped off the field. The Mountaineers starting left tackle went down with what appears to be a leg injury after a first-and-10 run play. Milum stayed down on the ground for a while before he was finally helped off the field by the West Virginia training staff.
If Milum is unable to return to the game, his absence only adds to the struggles the Mountaineers are dealing with in Saturday’s game. The sophomore entered into the season as an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team after an impressive year in 2021 at right tackle. He impressed the Mountaineers’ offensive coaching staff so much so in his freshman season that he was transitioned to left tackle in order to protect his quarterback’s blind side.
Milum is the perfect example of West Virginia keeping its homegrown talent in the state. The six-foot-six offensive lineman hails from Huntington, WV, where he played high school football at Spring Valley. And the 2021 recruiting class, Milum was a quality four-star recruit according to On3’s consensus recruiting ranking. He was the number one-ranked player to come out of West Virginia, ranked No.18 amongst tackles and was the No. 150 best player nationally.

Things did not get better for the Mountaineers after Milum went down. Texas Tech took that 17-3 into the half and picked up right where they left off in the second half. Texas Tech outscored West Virginia 31-7 in the second half to defeat the Mountaineers 48-10.
The loss to the Red Raiders hurts, and losing Milum in the process only adds to the pain the program and fans of the program are feeling. But West Virginia must quickly bounce back. Because next Saturday, they will take on the top team in the Big 12 conference, the TCU Horned Frogs. TCU will enter Saturday’s game as the last undefeated team in the conference, and likely the only one ranked in the top 10.
