Western Kentucky releases iconic Big Red mascot helmets
On Thursday, Western Kentucky caused a storm on social media when it revealed its newest helmet design. The red helmets will pay homage to the school’s mascot, Big Red, by featuring two large eyes identical to the beloved blob.
WKU gave its fans plenty of time to get excited. The team will debut the helmets on Oct. 10 when they face off against UTEP. Along with their eye-catching helmets, the Hilltoppers will don all-red uniforms, featuring white and black stripes on the sleeves.
If the Hilltoppers can capture a fraction of the success Big Red has, they should find a win on Thursday. Big Red is widely considered one of the best mascots in college football. Fittingly, in 2012, he was the first mascot inducted into the Capital One Mascot Challenge Hall of Fame.
In 2015, Ralph Carey, the creator of the now widely-known mascot, attempted to explain who or what Big Red is.
“Big Red is a personality, a character in the true sense,” Carey said. “Unquestionably the ultimate WKU fan, Big Red is also a bit unpredictable and that may add to the creature’s mystique. Big Red is your lovable, quirky neighbor who is fun to be around… but you’re still not sure if he is who he appears to be. The character was designed to leave you wondering.”

Western Kentucky hungry to bounce back
WKU will hope to leave nobody wondering who’s the better team next Thursday. In Week 5, the Hilltoppers narrowly fell 21-20 to Boston College. In the loss, WKU outgained the Eagles by 76 yards but committed three detrimental turnovers.
Further, the Hilltoppers committed five penalties in the loss, knocking them back 52 total yards. Despite an impressive defensive showing, WKU was unable to escape with the upset win over the ACC foe. Now, WKU head coach Tyson Helton is excited to kick off conference play.
“After five games, we know what we’re capable of doing, we know the team we could be, but we got to go out there and do it,” Helton said after the loss to Boston College. “Our guys will go back to work, they’ll continue to have their jaws set, get ready for conference play with UTEP. Very happy to go back home and see if we can get a big conference win.”
