Greg Gard reacts to spot within Selection Committee’s Top-16

Wisconsin is one of the best teams in the country ahead of the NCAA Tournament – and has since only improved upon its first ranking from the Selection Committee.
Following a fourth-straight win, with it being the best one of their season, on Saturday, Greg Gard reacted to the Badgers being at No. 11 overall, which would have them as a No. 3 seed in the bracket, by the NCAA Selection Committee. He thought it said a lot about what they think about his team and what they’ve done.
“That’s great,” said Gard. “That means we got the attention of people, right. We’re obviously playing good basketball. We’re a really good team and I think we’re getting better.”
Still, Wisconsin has six games to go to improve upon that resumé that already has them just outside the top-ten in all of college basketball per that committee.
“We got a lot of basketball left to play before that day comes,” said Gard. “That’s the exciting part – that they know there’s a lot more left to come and, you know, that starts with, you know, our next game.”

Wisconsin can expect to only improve upon that ranking as of now going into the next one. That’s because, after learning of their rating, the No. 16 Badgers won 94-84 at No. 7 Purdue on Saturday. They scored 58 in the second half against the Boilermakers as they posted 61.5% shooting from the field and 40% from three to win a shootout inside Mackey Arena. John Tonje led that output with 32 points (66.7% FG, 44.4% 3PT) while four other teammates scored in double-figures.
With that, Wisconsin is now at 20-5 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten. That has them at No. 11 in the latest edition of the AP Poll and at No. 9 currently at KenPom. They’re also at No. 12 in the updated NET Rankings as they’re now a game above .500 in Quad 1 with that win while having a perfect record against all of Quad 2, Quad 3, and Quad 4.
Wisconsin is on pace to have its best season yet under Gard. They could do just that now depending on how they finish the regular season and if they put themselves on that three-line, if not better, come Selection Sunday.
