Greg McElroy believes Tyler Van Dyke could make Wisconsin 'dangerous'
Greg McElroy had major predictions for Wisconsin last season that didn’t end up coming true. However, with the addition of QB Tyler Van Dyke, he sees a chance for them to happen in 2024 instead.
McElroy assessed Van Dyke’s potential impact on the Badgers during a recent episode of ‘Always College Football’. He began by noting what went wrong for the team’s offense a year ago after finishing 93rd in the nation.
“I just thought this offense would kind of take shape and, clearly, there were some growing pains,” McElroy admitted. “They could still run the ball pretty effectively last year. But there was some inconsistency at quarterback from time to time. There was inconsistency at wide receiver.”
That’s where Van Dyke comes in in Madison.
Now, to be clear, this all depends on what version of Van Dyke that Wisconsin gets out of the portal. If it’s the one that has thew 23 career interceptions at Miami with 12 of them coming last year, they could expect to have more of the same issues offensively. However, if it’s the one that showed flashes while with the Hurricanes, they can possibly make that leap that McElroy was expecting.
“We did talk about Tyler Van Dyke a little earlier in the show discussing what Miami has been. Granted, not directly talked about him. Talked about turnovers as it relates to Miami and that was Tyler Van Dyke’s biggest issue last year,” said McElroy. “There was one point in the year last year in which he was one of the top quarterbacks in the country as far as passing efficiency. That was not the case down the stretch.”

“If he can play like he did early in the season for a 12-game stretch? Look out, man. This could be a very dangerous football team,” McElroy stated. “But that’s a big if.”
Again, Van Dyke has had his moments while he was in Coral Gables. He completed 63.7% of his throws there for nearly 7,500 yards, with two 2,700-plus yard seasons, and 54 touchdowns. It’s just a matter of if he can get that turnover number down and emphasize more of the positives in his game as a redshirt senior.
McElroy wants to make right on that feel of his about Wisconsin. That means relying on Van Dyke, as the Badgers will be too, to be the quarterback and version of himself that they need him to be this fall.
“Will be watching very closely to see if he can regain his form, kind of shake off the turnover bug that plagued him at times last year,” said McElroy.
