Former Wisconsin wrestler Max Maylor was hired by Appalachian State to join the wrestling staff, according to a release.

Head coach JohnMark Bentley was thrilled to add the upperweight to the staff for this coming season. Maylor wrestled at 174 pounds throughout his entire career.

Now, he’ll head to the bench to begin his coaching tenure.

“I am excited to get started at App State,” Maylor said. “It’s a blessing to work alongside great coaches and learn from them. I’m looking forward to joining the program and contributing to its continued success!”

Maylor went 19-9 this past season, qualifying for NCAAs. He went 1-2 at the tournament in Kansas City.

Maylor only spent one season in Madison, wrestling for the Badgers as a grad transfer following five years at Michigan. While with the Wolverines, Maylor won a career high 13 matches in 2023.

Overall, Maylor won 58 matches and went 44-22 over the course of his final three seasons.

“Max is a great addition to our staff,” Bentley said. “I love the energy and enthusiasm that Max brings with a fresh perspective drawing from his college experiences. He will be a tremendous partner for our upper middle weights.”

A native of Highland, Wisconsin, Maylor was a three-time state placewinner in high school, capped by a state title as a prep senior in 2018. He went 174-23 in his prep career.

Maylor exhausted his eligibility at Wisconsin and the Badgers went right back to work rebuilding the roster and lineup.

Division III wrestling national champion Massoma Endene committed to the program back in May.

Over the last two years, Endene won two NCAA titles at the Division III level with Wartburg College. The school is located in Waverly (Iowa).

While at 197 pounds, he was the dominant force in the weight class, going 28-0 last season.

Prior to Wartburg College, Endene was a two-time Junior College All-American, including being the 2022 runner-up while with Iowa Lakes Community College.

Now, he’ll wrestle in the Big Ten with the Badgers under Chris Bono. The Badgers went 9-7 in duals last season and had 125 pounder Eric Barnett finish 4th at NCAAs.

The 197 pound weight class was manned by Joshua Otto last season, who struggled. Braxon Amos, who was injured at the end of the 2023 season, took an Olympic Redshirt this past year and is set to move up to heavyweight.
