San Diego State guard Nick Boyd commits to transfer to Wisconsin

San Diego State Aztecs point guard guard Nick Boyd has committed to transfer to the Wisconsin Badgers, On3 has learned. The Badgers will be the third team he’s played for in his college career after starting with the FAU Owls.

Boyd spent the first four years of his college career at FAU under head coach Dusty May. That included the pandemic-impacted season and a second season when he chose to utilize his redshirt. When May left for Michigan, the Owls saw several players transfer out of the program. That included Boyd, who landed at San Diego State for the 2024-25 season where he would go on to be an All-Mountain West selection.

Nick Boyd would start in all 31 games he played in for San Diego State this past season, averaging 29.9 minutes per game. He had previously started in 51 out of 88 career games with FAU. In his season with the Aztecs, he averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He also shot 41.1 percent from the field, 35.1 percent from three-point range, and 74.6 percent from the free-throw line. On the defensive end, he had 1.0 steals per game.

As a team, San Diego State was able to go 21-10 overall and 14-6 in Mountain West play. They’d make the NCAA Tournament as one of the Last Four In, and as an 11-seed they played North Carolina for a spot in the Round of 64. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, they struggled in that game and lost 95-68. Boyd finished that game with a team-high 12 points.

Now a sixth-year player, Boyd is joining a Wisconsin team that is coming off an excellent season. The Badgers’ 27-10 overall record was tied for their best in 10 seasons under head coach Greg Gard. Wisconsin’s 13-7 Big Ten record was then good for a fourth-place finish in Big Ten play. The Badgers would then make the NCAA Tournament as a three-seed and made it to the Round of 32 before getting bumped.

The hope is that Nick Boyd can be a key piece to the puzzle for Wisconsin next season. If he is able to click into place properly, then there is a chance he could lead the Badger back to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2017.
