Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke enters NCAA transfer portal

Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. He’ll have one year of eligibility remaining.

Van Dyke began his career at Miami in 2020, spending four years with the program. He transferred to Wisconsin ahead of the 2024 season.

However, he only played in three games this year due to suffering a season-ending injury against Alabama. His career-best season came in 2021, his second with the Hurricanes.

Van Dyke threw for 422 yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions and a 63.2% completion percentage this season. Over the course of his career, Van Dyke has 7,891 yards, 55 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a 63.7% completion percentage.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Van Dyke was a four-star recruit out of Glastonbury (Conn.) Suffield Academy, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 2 overall prospect in the state, the No. 19 quarterback in the class and the No. 263 overall prospect in the class.

There was a possibility Van Dyke could’ve returned to the Wisconsin program through a medical redshirt. Head coach Luke Fickell addressed that following the QB’s season-ending injury.

“We haven’t sat and talked with him, obviously there’s been a lot of things that have happened really fast,” Fickell said. “You could say the same things about James Thompson. These situations happen, you’re in the midst of a season. I think guys got to be able to process themselves, where they are, and what they’re doing …

“We’ll sit down and definitely talk with Tyler, will definitely sit down talk with James Thompson. It is what it is, and you see where they are and where you are. But I know this, that we love Tyler, and we love what he’s done, and hopefully there’s an opportunity that he wants to come back. That he would have that chance.”
