Scouting Journals for Caleb Burton

Caleb Burton Scouting Summary

Charles Power

10/29/21

Smooth, natural receiver who wins with route-running and technical skill. Uses precise cuts to separate within the route. Shows high-end body control and ability to adjust to the ball. Dangerous off of double moves. A natural hands receiver. Adept at finding holes in zone coverage and works his way to get open on broken plays. Quicker than fast and can improve his burst off the line. Does not project as a receiver who will blow by coverage at the college level. Can also stand to improve his play strength. Missed the entirety of his junior season with a torn ACL.

Caleb Burton and Lake Travis fell to rival Austin Westlake 63-21. The 6-foot, 165-pounder got Lake Travis on the board in the first half, taking advantage of a blown coverage. Bo Edmundson found Burton streaking up the seam. Burton has not been a high volume target for Lake Travis so far this season, entering the week with 23 receptions in nine games. He’s a savvy, technical route runner. We’d like to see him continue to improve his play strength.

Caleb Burton faces off with top 2023 corner

We saw another best-on-best wide receiver-cornerback matchup in Texas with Arlington Martin traveling to Lake Travis. Top 100 Ohio State wide receiver commit Caleb Burton faced off against top 100 2023 corner Javien Toviano. The game marked Burton's first appearance in nearly two years after missing his junior season with a knee injury. It was also his first game since transferring to Lake Travis during the offseason. Anyone looking at the stat sheet would assume Burton had his way with Toviano. That was not the case. Burton ended the game with nine receptions for 150 yards and one touchdown. But 58 of those yards came on a wide-open double-pass that went for a touchdown. Toviano won significantly more than he lost when matched up head-to-head with Burton, using his length to bother Burton on downfield routes.
