As a College Recruit

Physically-developed defensive lineman with advanced power along with length and quickness. Possesses a big frame with a muscled build and solid length with an 80-inch wingspan at 6-foot-4. Has brute strength which he pairs with initial quickness to create steady disruption along the line of scrimmage. Consistently shows quick and powerful hands at the point of attack with some advanced pass rush technique for a young defensive lineman. Very much a power player at this point in his development, but plays with some nuance and technical skill. Worked at both defensive end and defensive tackle as a junior at a powerhouse program in Texas’ highest classification as a junior before transferring high schools as a senior. A strong, but not elite athlete. Turned in dominant showings at college camps prior to his junior season. Capped of his high school career with another standout showing at a national event, earning Top Performer marks at the Under Armour All-America Game from On3.

David Hicks is a powerful, versatile defensive linemen with similar size, quick hands and play strength to Marlon Davidson. It remains to be seen if Hicks ultimately slides inside or plays as a big end, but we see him likely topping out at north of 300 pounds like Davidson.

David Hicks a top performer at Under Armour All-America Game week

Charles Power

David Hicks had a very strong week in Orlando. The Texas A&M signee was the On3 MVP on Day Three on the heels of a dominant showing as an interior pass rusher. The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder was the alpha on the Team Phantom defensive line all week, setting the tone at each practice. Hicks was violent at the point of attack, using his considerable play strength and heavy hands to stun offensive linemen. The Katy (Texas) Paetow product also showed a quick get-off and strong functional movement skills. Hicks approached each practice with a workman’s mentality and it showed over the course of the week.

David Hicks Jr. dominates Week 1 debut

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

Five-star defensive lineman David Hicks Jr. made his Houston return on Friday and didn’t waste any time finding his form. Playing off the edge and inside, Hicks dominated in the trenches with superb first-step quickness and an array of different moves. He ripped linemen, moved them at will, and often drove through them en route to multiple sacks and several more hits on the quarterback. The nation’s No. 9 overall player is an unstoppable force that also out-physicaled defenders playing tight end and showed off the athleticism with a touchdown reception. Hicks has a compelling case as the most polished and most college-ready DL in the country.
