As a College Recruit

Wagner has been a big name since middle school. With that reputation also comes lofty expectations. What pops off the page immediately with Wagner is his competitiveness. His motor is always running hot, on both ends of the floor. Defensively, he wants the opposing team's best player, and he picks them up full court. Offensively, Wagner plays a fearless game. He lacks top-end burst and his average length and size can make things tough for him at the rim, but he keeps coming. Wagner has seen every junk defense a team can throw at him, and he adjusts accordingly. The jump shot can get streaky, but he is a volume scorer. He has better court vision that he is given credit for. Is young for his grade and his competitive fire runs hot.

It is hard to ignore the fire that DJ Wagner plays with. There is a competitive nature that you can’t miss when he plays. He is a paint touch guard on offense, fearlessly getting two feet in the paint often. His handle is crafty enough in traffic to use a counter when his path to the rim is cut off. The jump shot is flat and inconsistent. He also has a tendency of trying to do too much, both with over dribbling or taking a bad shot. Defensively, he can guard the ball and has no issue taking the oppositions top assignment. He plays with aggression at the point of attack.

He finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds on 4-14 FG.

Kentucky signee DJ Wagner never disappoints from a competitive standpoint. He walked onto the court in this event with a purpose and he maintained that same focus throughout. Wagner touches the paint regularly, putting pressure on the front of the rim. He struggled a bit at times to finish against length, but he did show a mid range floater here. Jump shot is still inconsistent. He is a good defender, giving great effort.
