Ju'Juan Johnson makes play on offense, defense vs. Teurlings Catholic

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

Ju’Juan Johnson is a three-year starter for Lafayette (La.) Christian Academy, now entrenched as one of the top programs in Louisiana out of the Acadiana area. Playing quarterback, Johnson was LCA’s top playmaker offensively with the rock in his hands and came away with several long runs as he evaded pressure and also took over in the open field. At 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds with verified 4.5 speed, Johnson runs with conviction. He’s elusive with quick hips and short-area burst and has outstanding football awareness to play the quarterback position. With the game in the balance, Johnson shifted over the defensive back and made a third-down pass breakup out of slot, where his skill set is an ideal match. Johnson turned and ran with the slot receiver and perfectly deflected it. He was also in position to cover on the game’s final play despite an unbelievable throw and catch that decided the outcome. Johnson is one of the more intriguing athletes in the country regardless of position and has taken to defensive back seamlessly.

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

Johnson is new to playing in the secondary, but is taking to it at a rapid pace. Since landing overtures from Nebraska, LSU and Alabama, and immersing himself in the craft during drillwork at camps, Johnson has continued to grow and develop as a defensive back and was outstanding at cornerback on Friday. After earning offers from LSU and Alabama as a nickel, Johnson was sticky outside at cornerback, quick and instinctive, and able to shadow receivers around the field.

Johnson is a quarterback at Lafayette Christian Academy, but you wouldn’t know it watching him work out as a cornerback at LSU's skills camp. Johnson, who is new to the position, was fluid going through drill work in a private workout with LSU DB coach Robert Steeples. Johnson was able to turn and run seamlessly and accelerated well out of his breaks. He also showed natural ball skills in 1-on-1s and again in drill work with a skill-set fitting for the nickel. LSU offered a day later.
