As a College Recruit

Route running savant who is one of the top body control specialists in the 2023 cycle. One of the best receivers in the country when it comes to manipulating his body at the catch point in order to put himself in a position to catch the football. Lacks an ideal physical build. Measures in at nearly 5-foot-11, 175 pounds and jumped a 32-inch vertical during the spring camp circuit prior to his senior season. Top-end speed is solid but he’s not a burner. Ran 11.07 in the 100m and 22.79 in the 200m during his junior track and field season. Majority of his work will be out of the slot at the next level but can do some damage out wide as a Z-type receiver. High floor prospect who will be a menace to cover in man-to-man. Point guard for his high school basketball team. One of the older prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Mikey Matthews a top performer at Under Armour All-America Game week

Charles Power

No receiver won more reps over the course of the week than Mikey Matthews. The Utah commit had a revelatory performance in Orlando, making a strong case as the top route-runner on hand. Matthews’ quickness, spatial awareness and sneaky speed gave cornerbacks fits all week. He also showed solid ball skills with the ability to track the football over his shoulder. Matthews’ general coordination stood out. We saw this on display during Tuesday’s game as he caught a touchdown from Jackson Arnold on a back shoulder fade.

Mikey Matthews top performer Battle New Orleans

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

Mikey Matthews made the trek cross-country from Mission Viejo (Calif.) to help EPS Blaze make a deep run in New Orleans. Matthews came away with a handful of the biggest receptions throughout the week, especially on championship Sunday. The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder is undersized, but electric getting downfield and exceptional making catches in traffic. Matthews has outstanding hands, great stop-start quickness and gave defensive backs fits since he landed in Louisiana. There’s a Steve Smith element to Matthews’ game.
