Suntarine Perkins earns 5th star from On3

Charles Power

Ole Miss signee Suntarine Perkins (No. 21) makes the biggest jump into five-star range. A dominant two-way star in high school, Perkins backed up a huge senior season with a dominant showing at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. The 6-foot-1.5, 205-pounder is one of the longer linebackers nationally and has outstanding range, play speed and striking power.

Suntarine Perkins turns in phenomenal showing at Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game

Charles Power

Suntarine Perkins entered the week at Alabama-Mississippi All-Star practices as On3’s top-ranked 2023 prospect in the state of Mississippi and more than lived up to the lofty billing. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder immediately sticks out on a team full of Power Five and FBS prospects. Perkins has a long, lean and muscular build with an ideal linebacker frame. The Raleigh (Miss.) star turned in a dominating performance in Mississippi’s Tuesday night practice and followed that up with another strong showing on Wednesday. He showed a wide repertoire of skills in 11-on-11 work, recording a sack and tackle for loss off the edge before kicking out to cover slot receivers. On Wednesday we saw Perkins chase down Alabama safety commit Bray Hubbard (playing quarterback this week) from behind for a would-be sack. The ability to diagnose plays and finish with physicality was also apparent. A prolific multi-positional high school player, Perkins primarily working at linebacker at Alabama-Mississippi practices, but may see some carries throughout the week. Alabama-Mississippi marks a whirlwind run for the top 100 prospect, as he turned in a historic showing in leading his team to a state title last week.Based on the end of his senior season and the showing in Mobile, Perkins looks like one of the top linebacker prospects in the 2023 cycle.

Suntarine Perkins has Herculean effort to lift Raleigh (Miss.) to 3A state championship

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

Perkins, a longtime Ole Miss commit, capped his high school football career with Herculean effort, which included snaps as running back and as a wing-back, linebacker, and on various special teams units. He racked up 334 yards on 34 carries (9.8 YPC), four touchdowns rushing and four more 2-point conversions. He also piled up six tackles and a fourth-quarter interception. Even more impressive, Perkins only left the field for a handful of snaps throughout the four-quarter shootout. It’s worth pointing out that Perkins’ pick and go-ahead rushing score came in the fourth quarter, and on the ensuing series, Perkins’ tackle at the line of scrimmage denied the opposition a 2-point attempt. Offensively, Perkins spent time not only toting the rock, breaking away from defenders, and also running through them on occasion, but he excelled as a blocker. He moves well in space and despite slimming down to close to 200 pounds as a senior, can easily move defenders off the ball at will. That willingness was on full display on special teams, too. Defensively, Perkins lined up largely in the box and was active slowing down the run. Perkins is rangy and has a background playing safety, which shows in his playstyle. It’s also evident in coverage. He often lined up as a nickel and has the speed, wingspan and instincts to roam. Perkins easily plucked an interception lined up to cover the slot receiver and throughout the game kept pass-catchers in front. The volume is high, and so is the production. It’s certainly glaring, however, for a defensive player to be so impactful in other phases of the game. This game more than any, the On300 defender dominated those snaps running the football, catching it, and barreling over defenders as a lead-blocker.

Suntarine Perkins a big riser in updated On300

Charles Power

The Ole Miss commit rose to No. 74 from No. 267 in the On300. At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Perkins possesses high-end playing speed and movement skills. He can win battles with his quickness, acceleration and physicality. Perkins can also end plays and cut off angles with his speed and length. As a three-down linebacker, he has shown the ability to be a knock-down tackler, as well as a smooth player in coverage. Perkins also rushed for over 1,000 yards last season and played safety when he was younger. Overall, he possesses a lot of upside as a 2023 recruit.
