Walker Howard has huge outing in return from injury

Charles Power

Walker Howard was 28 of 43 for 509 yards and six touchdowns in leading his Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas More team to a 62-60 win over LaPlace (La.) East St. John. The game marked Howard’s return after missing the previous five weeks with a fractured fibula. You wouldn’t know Howard was coming back from an injury based on how he moved and played. The top 100 passer made several off-platform throws, including one across his body that went for a touchdown in the first half.

Walker Howard leads team to last-second win

Charles Power

Walker Howard carried St. Thomas More to a last second win over Monroe (La.) Neville, outdoing a Herculean rushing day from TCU commit Ajay Allen. Howard was under constant duress, but still managed to make a bunch of individual plays. He was accurate as a passer despite his receivers not being able to make some plays. Howard led a game-winning drive, throwing a touchdown in the game's final seconds. He also made a number of plays with his feet, including an impressive touchdown run at the end of the first quarter, to put St. Thomas More on the board. Howard finished 27 of 40 for 354 yards and three touchdowns (zero interceptions. He rushed for 49 yards and two touchdowns – a total that would be higher if you took out several sacks. Howard has to do much more individual playmaking this season as opposed to the past. Long-term, this is likely beneficial to his development.

Walker Howard faces off against defending state champion

Charles Power

Howard was 23 for 39 for 308 yards and three touchdowns against defending state champion Madison Prep. The top 100 passer was comfortable running STM's up-tempo offense and did a nice job avoiding a tough pass rush. He worked with an inexperienced supporting cast and was plagued by a key drop late in the fourth quarter. There was zip on the passes, and he put his receivers in a position to make plays. Scheduled on short notice in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, the game was an instant classic and probably the best high school contest I've seen early this season. The game came down to the wire with Madison Prep winning 38-35 on a last-second field goal.

Walker Howard shows well at Elite 11 Finals

Charles Power

Walker Howard was a standout in the Cover 2 Hole Shot competition portion at the end of the first day of the Elite 11 Finals. He consistently delivered what we felt were several of the best throws of that session. His ability to throw with proper trajectory and velocity stood out in the competition. Howard has some spring in his movements and displayed an above-average arm. He doesn’t have one of the quicker releases on hand and does tend to roll the ball off his palm at times. Howard was a bit over-amped to start his Pro Day session, causing him to miss high on a few throws but settled in and finished off hot, connecting on a number of nice passes. Howard checked down often on the first day of 7-on-7 play but let it rip a little more on the final day of action, leading multiple touchdown drives. On the final day, Howard helped his team win the 7-on-7 tournament.
