Zalance Heard Scouting Summary

Charles Power

3/30/22

Physically-gifted offensive tackle prospect with outstanding length and block-finishing skills. Has prototypical size at the position, measuring 6-foot-5.5, 308 pounds prior to his senior season. Possesses elite length, with his arms checking in at 36 inches on college visits. Began his career as a defensive lineman prior to transferring to northeast Louisiana power Neville High. Played exclusively at right tackle as a junior before flipping to left tackle as a senior. His defensive lineman athleticism shows up by way of plus movement skills, particularly in the run game where he’s a mauling presence. Was already a dominant drive blocker in his first full season playing offensive line. Has natural upper body strength to go with his length and athleticism. Plays with a nasty disposition and works to finish blocks with authority. Is a bit high-hipped and will need to continue adding strength and flexibility to his base. Also needs to continue developing his pass set technique as he gains experience at the position. Looked like the top offensive line prospect on hand at the Under Armour All-America Game by a considerable margin. Was a top performer for the week after a strong showing in practice and the game, where he was generating a considerable push as a run blocker.

Zalance Heard looked like the top offensive lineman all week – both in practice and in Tuesday’s game. The 6-foot-5.5, 315-pounder pairs elite length and high-end upper body strength to manifest in a brick wall on the edge. It took Heard a few reps to adjust during 1-on-1’s but he quickly got his feet and turned in impressive play the rest of the week. In Tuesday’s game, Heard used his strength to create a push. There were several plays where he completely bullied opposing defensive linemen. Make no mistake, the offensive line group at Under Armour was not strong, but Heard looked the part of one of the top prospects at the position nationally.

Zalance Heard (No. 13) moves up a few spots to his fifth star after an in-person evaluation at LSU’s elite camp in June. The Monroe (La.) Neville trenchman is a lean 6-foot-6, 308 pounds with 36.5-inch arms. Heard was a dominant run blocker in his first season as an offensive lineman in 2021 and has shown considerable long-term upside both on video and in person.

Offensive tackle Zalance Heard was On3’s top-ranked 2023 prospect to work out for the LSU staff. The 6-foot-5.5 305-pounder made his way down to Baton Rouge from Monroe and worked out for offensive line coach Brad Davis on Friday. Heard’s unique dimensions were on display from the jump. He has elite length, with arms that measure over 36 inches is a lean 300-plus pounds. Heard’s upside was evident throughout the session. He’s a nimble mover in addition to the dimensions and plays with some strength and attitude. It’s easy to forget that Heard is entering his second year playing offensive line. We saw him line up at left tackle – where he’s projected to play this season after working as a right tackle as a junior. There are still some areas for improvement. Heard will need to hone his pass set technique and continue adding mass and strength to his base. But the high-end talent was easy to see in this setting.

Heard explodes through his blocks and for a 6-foot-6, 308-pounder, he’s light on his feet and is a Saturday-ready player. On3’s No. 16 overall player has seamlessly made the transition to left tackle and dominated in 1-on-1s against inside pass moves and also establishing the perimeter. He has an NFL wingspan and 36.5-inch arms, football smarts and the rock-solid foundation to keep the pocket well and clear paths in the process.

Heard made the transition from defensive line to offensive line, and this spring made the seamless transition to left tackle. At 6-foot-8 and 300-plus-pounds, Heard already has the looks of a collegiate tackle. He also plays like one — with nimble feet and excellent power, and after an in-person evaluation, he is just scratching the surface. Heard was able to absorb pass-rushers and bounce them off consistently and has excelled under fantastic coaching at Neville. He put together some highlight-reel blocks and has the frame, strength, agility and understanding of the game -- on top of a willingness to be coached -- to be one of the best at this premium position.
