Angel Reese shares strong reaction after Chicago Sky fire Teresa Weatherspoon
The Chicago Sky fired Teresa Weatherspoon Thursday after less than a full year with the franchise, the Chicago Sun-Times’ Annie Costabile reported. After the news broke, Sky forward Angel Reese shared a strong reaction on social media.
Reese developed a close relationship with Weatherspoon during her rookie season. She became an All-Star as she set the WNBA record for consecutive double-doubles while averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds. Chicago missed the playoffs after going 13-27 and Reese’s season ended prematurely after a wrist injury.
Reese took to social media to share her reaction and discuss her relationship with Weatherspoon. The news came as a bit of a surprise, and the former LSU star struggled to find the words.
“I’m heartbroken,” Reese wrote. “I’m literally lost for words knowing what this women meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever.
“I’ll never question God why he brings people in my life and takes them away from me in the capacity that I need them but i’ve always believed everyone is in your life for a reason and a season. You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon.”

Weatherspoon had a decorated WNBA career from 1997-2004. She was a five-time All-Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year before getting into coaching with the ABA’s Westchester Phenoms. She then became an associate head coach at Louisiana Tech in 2008 and became the head coach in 2009, amassing a 99-71 record at the helm.
After three years on the New Orleans Pelicans’ staff in the NBA, the Sky hired Weatherspoon as the first full-time head coach since James Wade’s midseason departure in 2023. It was her first WNBA head coaching job, and Chicago went 13-27 under her watch. The Sky just missed a playoff spot.
One year after drafting Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso in the Top 10, the Sky will go into this year’s draft without its own draft pick as a result of a trade made by Wade. Instead, the Dallas Wings own the selection. Chicago managed to get back into the first round by trading Marina Mabrey – the centerpiece of the initial trade – to the Connecticut Sun.
