The second day of Big Ten Softball Tournament action is in the books, setting up what appears to be an exciting semifinal round on Friday afternoon.

After two double-digit seeds advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday, the trend of upsets continued to start Thursday’s slate. 8-seed Indiana upset top-seeded Northwestern 4-3 to become the first team to claim a spot in the semifinals after the Wildcats walked in a couple of runs in the fifth to take a three-run lead.

Despite a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh, the Hoosiers escaped with a one-run victory.

The second game of the day went a bit different. 4-seed Nebraska finished off 10-seed Minnesota in five innings. Minnesota hit a lead-off home run off the first pitch of the game, but it was all Nebraska from there. In the final three innings, the Huskers would outscore the Golden Gophers 9-1, including four runs in the fifth to end the game early.

Another mercy rule five-inning game would follow in game three — but this one was as improbable as they come. 2-seed Michigan and 10-seed Maryland played four and a half innings of rainy, scoreless softball before everything that could go wrong for the Terrapin, did.

The Wolverines would score 10 runs — capped by a walk-off grand slam by Avery Fantucci — in the fifth to close the Huskers out.

Upsets continued with the late game, seeing 11-seed Wisconsin will its way past 3-seed Rutgers 7-3 thanks to a four-run fifth inning that would end up being too much for the Scarlet Knights to come back from to round out a must-watch semifinal field.
