Duke transfer Oluchi Okananwa commits to Maryland

Duke transfer Oluchi Okananwa has committed to Maryland, she told On3. The 5-10 sophomore from Boston (MA) averaged 10.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game as a sophomore last season.
“What led to my decision was a deep trust in Coach [Brenda] Frese and the coaching staff to help nurture me into the player I know I can become,” Okananwa told On3. “At Maryland, they put an emphasis on skill development and that was something at the top of my list through this process. I like the pace and style that they play and feel like it would allow for a smooth transition for me.”
Her relationships with the coaching staff played a major role in her decision.
“The biggest word that comes to mind when I think of our relationship is easy going,” Okananwa said. “We really just clicked and have been on the same page from the jump with not just the goals I have for myself, but for the goals they have for the team. It’s been exciting to get to know Coach Frese and hear all the amazing stories she’s accumulated over the past 23 years. I’m looking forward to making even more of those memories with her.”
Okananwa has significant goals for the rest of her college career and felt that Maryland was the best place to accomplish those goals.

“The goals for next season are to win,” Okananwa said. “Who isn’t looking to win a Big Ten championship and make a deep run in the tournament? This program sets me up to achieve this goal due to the roster put together. I’m just so excited to be a part of it. I also have a goal of just all around improving. I feel like I have so much more room to grow as a player and student of this game and I know that can be achieved here.”
Okananwa is confident in the team’s potential and is excited to arrive on campus and be a Terrapin.
“I know it’s early, but you already can tell with this group of girls that there’s a shared hunger for success. I’m excited about playing in the Big Ten. This is a phenomenal league which sets you up for success in your preparation for the tournament. I’m blessed with this opportunity to be a Maryland Terrapin.”
