Holy Cross’ Maureen Magarity has stepped down from her position as head women’s basketball coach, the program announced on Tuesday afternoon. A source confirmed to On3 that Magarity did not step down for another coaching position, but for personal reasons.

Magarity spent four seasons at the helm of the program. She guided the Crusaders to back-to-back Patriot League Tournament Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances (2023, 2024) including a First Four victory last season over UT Martin

The Crusaders recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons under Magarity. In 2022-23, the Holy Cross recorded the second most wins (24) in a season in program history.

Magarity released the following statement on Tuesday afternoon: “It is with mixed emotions that I am stepping down from my position as head women’s basketball coach at Holy Cross. While I know the timing is not ideal, after much thought I’ve decided to prioritize and focus on my family. I have truly loved coaching for the past 21 years but I feel excited to be more present for my daughters. I will treasure all the memories we’ve made over the past four years on The Hill and am so grateful for the players, coaches and fans that made this decision so difficult. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished on the biggest stage and know the program will continue to thrive. Thank you to President Rougeau, Kit Hughes and Rose Shea for all of your support over the years.”

The program announced that assistant coach Candice Green will serve as the Crusaders’ interim head coach for the entirety of the 2024-25 season.

Interim head coach Green joined the Holy Cross staff last season after four years at Fordham, including one year as the interim head coach. That season, Green helped guide the Rams to a 19-13 record and an appearance in the WNIT.
