For the first time in three-plus years, South Carolina has lost a conference game.
No. 4 Texas won 66-62 over No. 2 South Carolina this afternoon inside the Moody Center in Austin. With that, the Gamecocks lost their first conference game in the SEC since December 30th, 2021.
The Longhorns essentially led from start to finish, and by as much as ten, at home today. There were a few ties in a competitive game between two teams in the top-five but, in the end, Texas took it by four.
Madison Booker led the way with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals. Kyla Oldacre (13) and Taylor Jones (11) also got into double-figures as well. As a team, the Longhorns also won down low with a seven-board edge on the glass and 40 points in the paint. That was clearly their focus on the inside as they also pulled this off without hitting a single three-pointer in the game.
MiLaysia Fulwiley (13 points, three assists, three steals) was the only Gamecock to get into double-digits in scoring. Six others scored anywhere from seven to nine points but, in total, South Carolina shot just 36.8% from the field and 26.3% from three.
Again, South Carolina hadn’t lost a game in the Southeastern Conference since their opener in league play in ’21-’22. They went to Missouri that day and lost in overtime at 70-69. It was their lone one on the record before losing once more in the final of the SEC Tournament and then going on to win the national championship.

Since then, South Carolina had won 57 in a row against competition in the SEC. That made up a total mark of 65-3 against conference opponents since that day in CoMo, including three appearances and two wins in the final of the SEC Tournament.
Now, with this loss on Sunday, Texas and South Carolina are now tied atop the standings for the league at 10-1. This gives the Longhorns the current tiebreaker too, though, with five games apiece left for each until the conference tournament in Greenville.
South Carolina hasn’t lost often, especially within the conference, based on the last six years. However, one of the new members for this season got them today with it being an important result in the league ahead of the postseason.
