Texas, South Carolina clinch shares of SEC women's basketball title, No. 1 seed to be determined by coin flip

Through sixteen conference games, the top two seeds remained tied atop the standings in the SEC. That means a coin will now decide who is No. 1 come the SEC Tournament later this week in Greenville.
With their respective wins on Sunday, South Carolina and Texas tied for the top seed in the Southeastern Conference at 15-1. With no way to tiebreak between the two going into the postseason, Greg Sankey will have to flip a coin at the league’s office later today.
Sankey will do so live at halftime of Ole Miss vs. LSU, which should be within the next hour or so, on the SEC Network.
This is the third and final method of a tiebreaker for the conference’s top seed. Head-to-head record is the first but the two split their season series against one another with South Carolina winning 67-50 in Columbia on January 12th before Texas won 66-62 about a month later on February 9th in Austin. The second is then their records against their highest-ranked common opponents in the league but, again, since they only lost to one another, that wouldn’t apply either.
That’s where the coin comes into play for the Gamecocks and the Longhorns.
No. 6 South Carolina moved to 27-3 overall to end the regular season today with a 78-66 win over No. 15 Kentucky.

No. 1 Texas then moved to 29-2 overall to finish the year after a 72-46 win against Florida.
This is a wild result to reach with, despite sharing the regular-season title, the top seed being determined by something so practical. That’s where things stand between these two, though, with this afternoon’s flip deciding which side of the bracket that South Carolina and Texas will be on starting on Friday.
UPDATE: South Carolina earns No. 1 seed, Texas is No. 2 in SEC Women’s Tournament following coin flip
The No. 1 seed in the SEC Women’s Tournament came down to a tie-breaking coin flip this afternoon. Now, we know if it came up Gamecocks or Longhorns for Greg Sankey today at the league office.
The flip, which aired live this afternoon on the SEC Network, saw South Carolina earn the No. 1 seed for the SEC Tournament later this week in Greenville. That means Texas will be the No. 2 seed in the women’s bracket.
“Okay, here we go,” Sankey said with the flip.
“Execution under pressure. Execution under pressure,” joked Sankey following the result. “Yeah, I’ve been here for two hours flipping the coin practicing so things happen with purpose here so we executed well.”
