Alabama High School Football Games of the Week

The first week of October is delivering an eye-popping slate of Alabama high school football.

With teams at the halfway point of the 2024 season, it’s time to turn things up a notch. Four games between teams ranked in the On3 Massey Ratings Alabama top 25 are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Below are the top games to watch in the Yellowhammer State this week:

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

#12 Enterprise vs. #13 CarverThursday, Oct. 3
Enterprise continues to sludge through a stout portion of its 2024 schedule and will look to avoid a three-game losing streak on Thursday night at Montgomery Carver. The Wildcats have lost to No. 1 Central and No. 3 Auburn but will look to hand Carver its first defeat of the season. The No. 13 Wolverines enter the week at 5-0 with their best victory coming at the beginning of the season over No. 16 Vestavia Hills. Enterprise will likely be their toughest task so far this season as both teams look to reach the state top 10.

#3 Auburn vs. #1 Phenix City CentralFriday, Oct. 4
Central was gearing up for the national game of the week against IMG Academy (Fla.) last week, but Hurricane Helene said otherwise. Luckily for the Red Devils, they don’t have to wait long for another big challenge. No 3 Auburn also didn’t play last week and will now look for the top spot in the rankings with a win over Central. Both programs will enter the Friday clash at 5-0. Auburn already has three ranked victories under its belt while Central has just one — its latest, a 13-point triumph over Enterprise. The regular season game of the year in Alabama will go down at Garrett-Harrison Stadium on Friday.

#6 Hewitt-Trussville vs. #4 ThompsonFriday, Oct. 4
In the other top-10 Alabama battle coming up this week, 5-1 Hewitt-Trussville will look to hand 4-2 Thompson its second loss in a row. The No. 6 Huskies’ lone loss came against No. 8 Hoover in an 8-7 slog. Since then, they’ve rebounded with a pair of blowout wins and now face another big test this week. Offensive ineptitude has cost Thompson twice now following a 14-13 loss to No. 2 Clay-Chalkville last weekend. The Warriors have had a topsy-turvy season thus far but are favored to get back on track against Trussville, per the Massey Ratings.

#22 Mountain Brook vs. #2 Clay-ChalkvilleFriday, Oct. 4
Clay-Chalkville continues to make a case for the best defense in the entire South. Now 5-0, the Cougars have allowed just 27 total points this season. A missed extra point in overtime got them over the hump against Thompson last week and they’ll look for much more comfortable victory on Friday against Mountain Brook. The 4-2 Spartans have lost a pair of matchups against top-10 teams in-state but were competitive in both. They’ll head to Chalkville coming off a 5-point win over Homewood.
