After the eighth week of the Alabama high school football season, the On3 Massey Ratings have slightly shifted entering the middle of October.

Montgomery Catholic Prep is a new member of the top 10 while the entire top five remains the same. Auburn remains the top-ranked team with just three games left in the regular season.

Below are the updated top 25 teams in the state of Alabama, as of Oct. 14.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Auburn

Previous: No. 1
Auburn’s first week as the top-ranked team in the state did not disappoint as it steamrolled Smiths Station 70-6 to improve to 7-0 on the season. The Tigers have the state’s No. 2 offense and No. 5 defense, per the Massey Ratings. The win over No. 4 Phenix City Central is the biggest of the season and could propel Auburn to an undefeated run in 2024. The Tigers head to Montgomery to take on No. 16 Carver this week.

2. Clay-Chalkville

Previous: No. 2
Clay-Chalkville continues to look impressive and capable of defending its state title later this year. The Cougars also improved to 7-0 over the weekend by defeating Birmingham Huffman 66-12 and are now averaging 39.7 points per game. One of three teams to have a top-five offense and defense in the state, Clay-Chalkville gets back on the road this week for another big battle, this time against No. 11 Oxford.

3. Alabaster Thompson

Previous: No. 3
After playing consecutive low-scoring games, Thompson finally landed a comfortable victory over the weekend, besting No. 19 Hillcrest 45-20 on the road. The Warriors are now 6-2 and 3-1 in ranked in-state matchups. The defense ranks No. 1 in the state, per the Massey Ratings, and has allowed 20-plus points just twice all season. No. 9 Hoover heads to Alabaster this week.

4. Phenix City Central

Previous: No. 4
After suffering its first loss of the season to new No. 1 Auburn on Oct. 4, Phenix City Central returned to form last week, defeating Montgomery Carver in a tight 31-26 ballgame. The Red Devils have seen an uptick in competition as of late and are now 6-1 on the season. Their offense still ranks No. 1 in the state and will look to keep things going this week at No. 7 Opelika.

5. Saraland

Previous: No. 5
Saraland survived a scare on the road over the weekend, defeating No. 24 St. Paul’s Episcopal 19-14 to improve to 7-0 on the season. The Spartans have easily maneuvered through a rather mediocre schedule in 2024 and has their sights set on an undefeated regular season. They host 0-8 Mobile Murphy this week before closing things out at Theodore on Oct. 25.

6. Hewitt-Trussville

Previous: No. 6
Hewitt-Trussville picked up a big 49-7 victory over Prattville last week and is now 6-2 this season. The Huskies continue to hover around the top five and still have the No. 3 defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Their favored to easily win both of their remaining regular season games, beginning with a home contest against 3-4 Birmingham Oak Mountain this week.

7. Opelika

Previous: No. 9 (+2)
Opelika has now won five games in a row following a 30-13 romp over No. 13 Enterprise last week. The Bulldogs have just one loss (to No. 1 Auburn) and are allowing just over 12 points per game this season. They’ll look for win No. 8 on the year this Friday as No. 4 Phenix City Central heads to town.
