Following multiple eye-popping results, the On3 Massey Ratings top 25 in the state of Alabama have shifted in a big way entering the final week of the regular season for many.

Saraland is now up to No. 2, while Hoover is now No. 6. Both Clay-Chalkville and Phenix City Central suffered losses and each fell a few spots in the top 10 as a result.

Below are the updated top 25 teams in the state of Alabama, as of Oct. 20.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Auburn

Previous: No. 1
Auburn went back on the road and picked up another impressive victory over the weekend, besting No. 16 Montgomery Carver 29-14. Now 8-0, the Tigers have just one regular season game left on the docket, a home tilt against 4-4 Dothan on Friday. Auburn has the momentum at the top of the rankings with the postseason looming.

2. Saraland

Previous: No. 5 (+3)
Thanks to multiple losses around the state, Saraland is now No. 2 in the state, checking in with an 8-0 record following a 58-7 throttling of Murphy last week. The Spartans now have the No. 3 offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings, and will now close out the regular season this week at Theodore.

3. Alabaster Thompson

Previous: No. 3
Despite losing 27-26 at home to Hoover over the weekend, Thompson remains at No. 3 in the state rankings entering its final game of the regular season. The Warriors are now 6-3 and have three ranked victories on their résumé. They’ll close the campaign at home against Prattville this week.

4. Hewitt-Trussville

Previous: No. 6 (+2)
To no surprise, Hewitt-Trussville put forth another impressive offensive effort over the weekend, skulling Oak Mountain 63-0. The Huskies are 7-2 and still have a top-five offense and defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Trussville will finish the season at 0-8 Tuscaloosa County on Friday night.

5. Clay-Chalkville

Previous: No. 2 (-3)
Clay-Chalkville suffered its first loss of the season over the weekend, losing 21-10 on the road against Oxford. The Cougars dropped three spots in the state rankings as a result and are now 7-1 in 2024. The defending state champs stay on the road this week and will head to Pinson Valley before finishing the season on Nov. 1 against No. 13 Vestavia Hills.

6. Hoover

Previous: No. 9 (+3)
Hoover went on the road and defeated Thompson over the weekend for its biggest victory of the season. The 7-2 Buccaneers are now pushing for top-five status entering their final game of the campaign and now have the No. 3 defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. They host No. 13 Vestavia Hills to close things out this week.

7. Opelika

Previous: No. 7
Opelika continues to emerge as legitimate threat to win a state title, with its latest example being a 23-14 win over Phenix City Central last week. The Bulldogs are now 8-1 and have two ranked victories under their belt. A trip to Montgomery Carver will finish up the regular season on Friday night.

8. Phenix City Central

Previous: No. 4 (-4)
Central’s late-season spiral continued last week, as the Red Devils fell for the second time this season in a 9-point loss to Opelika. Things haven’t been quite right for the former No. 1 since their game against IMG Academy was canceled last month. Now 6-2, Central will look to get back on track with a win over lowly Jefferson Davis this week before getting ready for the postseason.

9. Oxford

Previous: No. 11 (+2)
Oxford made a statement over the weekend, holding then-No. 2 Clay-Chalkville to just 10 points for an emphatic 11-point win to improve to 8-0 on the year. The Yellow Jackets continue to answer the bell and now have a very visible path to a 10-0 campaign. They’ll head to Huffman this week before closing the regular season at Florence.

10. Spain Park

Previous: No. 8 (-2)
Like Oxford, Spain Park also remained undefeated over the weekend, as it picked up a 42-7 win at home over Calera. The 8-0 Jaguars out of Birmingham have a top-15 offense and defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings, and continue to look the part heading into its final two games of the season — at Chilton County and at Gardendale.
