Alabama High School Football Rankings: Top 25 teams - Oct. 7
Following multiple top-10 matchups, the Alabama high school football rankings have once again shifted moving into the second week of October.
Auburn is now the top-ranked team in the state following its impressive road win over former No. 1 Phenix City Central. Alabaster Thompson is also back in the top three following a big victory over No. 6 Hewitt-Trussville.
Below are the updated top 25 teams in the state of Alabama, per the On3 Massey Ratings, as of Oct. 7.
The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Auburn
Previous: No. 3 (+2)
Football isn’t all bad in Auburn this season, as the high school Tigers are now the top team in the state after taking down Phenix City Central on the road, 38-33. Georgia Southern receiver commit Peyton Plott and junior running back Omar Mabson each had two touchdowns in the win, improving Auburn to 6-0 on the season. It is favored to win each of the three remaining regular season games on its schedule, beginning with a matchup against 0-7 Smiths Station this week.
2. Clay-Chalkville
Previous: No. 2
Coming off a big win over Thompson the week prior, Clay-Chalkville did not dispatch of No. 20 Mountain Brook easily last Friday. Defense was once again crucial for the Cougars, who won 21-14 to improve to 6-0 this season. As they push for their third 6A state title in the last four years, just two ranked matchups remain on the schedule. They’ll host 1-5 Huffman this week before heading to No. 10 Oxford on Oct. 18.
3. Alabaster Thompson
Previous: No. 4 (+1)
Thompson continues to bring an elite defense to the field every week and bounced back from its heartbreaking overtime loss to Clay-Chalkville with a 15-10 win at home over No. 6 Hewitt-Trussville last weekend. The 5-2 Warriors are allowing just 13 points per game and have allowed more than 20 points just once in 2024. They now head to Tuscaloosa later this week to take on No. 18 Hillcrest.
4. Phenix City Central
Previous: No. 1 (-3)
It’s a three-spot drop for the Red Devils after suffering their first loss of the season over the weekend to Auburn. Do-it-all senior Tristan Williams found the end zone three times, though it wasn’t enough in a 38-33 loss. Central still has all to play for moving forward amidst a packed 7A. It hosts No. 16 Montgomery Carver this week.
5. Saraland
Previous: No. 5
Saraland remained undefeated over the weekend, handling Baldwin County 55-7. The Spartans continue to light up opposing defenses and have surpassed 30 points in all six of its games so far in 2024. That offense ranks No. 3 in the state, per the Massey Ratings. They now head to Mobile for a battle against fellow undefeated St. Paul’s Episcopal, the No. 17 team in the state.
6. Hewitt-Trussville
Previous: No. 6
Despite losing 15-10 to No. 3 Thompson over the weekend, Hewitt-Trussville remains No. 6 in the state rankings. The Huskies are now 5-2, with both of their losses coming against top-10 programs. Heavily favored in its final three regular season games, Trussville returns home this week to host 4-2 Prattville on Friday.

7. Spain Park
Previous: No. 7
Spain Park now has four wins away from home this season following an easy 42-7 win at Pelham. The Jaguars are now 6-0 and are averaging over 37 points per game. The path to an undefeated season is clear, as each of the four remaining games on the schedule are against unranked teams. They will begin a two-game home stand this Thursday against undefeated Chelsea, a top-40 team in the state.
8. Hoover
Previous: No. 8
Hoover got back to its winning ways over the weekend, besting Oak Mountain for a 28-10 win. The Buccaneers are now 5-2 and have a defense that ranks No. 2 in the state, per the Massey Ratings. They’ve allowed more than 10 points just once in their last five games. This week, Hoover heads to 0-6 Tuscaloosa County.
9. Opelika
Previous: No. 11 (+2)
Opelika made it four wins in a row over the weekend with a 28-7 dusting of Dothan on the road. The Bulldogs are now 6-1 and have allowed just 33 points in their last four games. Their final three regular season games are all against ranked opponents. First up is a big test at home against No. 12 Enterprise on Friday before No. 4 Central comes to town the following week.
10. Oxford
Previous: No. 10
Oxford blanked Pell City 27-0 over the weekend and is now 7-0 this season. The Yellow Jackets have just one ranked win under their belt thus far, but have taken care of business every week and have a top-15 offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. They’ll return to action for their biggest game of the season on Oct. 18 at home against No. 2 Clay-Chalkville.
