Arizona High School Football

The second half of the 2024 Arizona high school football regular season began last week and the On3 Massey Ratings have once again shifted.

Hamilton dropped two spots to No. 5 following a loss to No. 2 Basha, while Centennial is back in the top 10 after winning its second game in a row.

Below are the updated top programs in the state of Arizona, as of Oct. 14.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Liberty

Previous: No. 1
Liberty survived a rare scare over the weekend, defeating No. 14 Phoenix Pinnacle 32-29. The Lions trailed in the fourth quarter but rallied to improve to 5-1 on the season. To no surprise, the top-ranked offense and defense in the state resides in Peoria, per the Massey Ratings. Three ranked opponents remain on the schedule for Liberty in the regular season, but its heavily favored in each and is expected to enter the postseason with a 9-1 tally.

2. Basha

Previous: No. 2
Basha has firmly established itself as the No. 2 team in the Grand Canyon State. The Bears picked up a 15-point win over then-No. 3 Hamilton over the weekend and now have consecutive wins over top-five teams in-state. Still averaging over 41 points per game, Basha is now 6-1 and will enter its bye week before returning on Oct. 25 for another top-10 clash against No. 8 Chandler.

3. Queen Creek American Leadership Academy

Previous: No. 4 (+1)
The Patriots were idle over the weekend but were bumped up a spot following Hamilton’s loss to Basha. Now the No. 3 team in the state, American Leadership Academy remains 6-0 and is now entering a crucial four-game stretch to finish the regular season. It will take on four ranked opponents, beginning with a clash against No. 6 Red Mountain on the road this week. Games against No. 7 Highland, No. 20 Williams Field and No. 15 Queen Creek are also on the docket.

4. Brophy Prep

Previous: No. 5 (+1)
After taking No. 2 Basha down to the wire, Brophy was idle last week and is now set to get back in action on Friday at Phoenix Desert Vista. The 5-1 Broncos have the No. 7 defense and No. 10 offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Unlike most at the top of the rankings, Brophy has a manageable finish to its regular season schedule and is projected to finish with a 9-1 record.

5. Hamilton

Previous: No. 3 (-2)
Hamilton suffered its first loss of the season over the weekend, falling 35-20 on the road at Basha. The Huskies are now 5-1 but still have the No. 4 offense and No. 8 defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Two top-10 matchups at the end of the season loom, but they’ll now embark on a two-game home stand that begins on Friday against No. 18 Perry.

6. Red Mountain

Previous: No. 6
Red Mountain has emerged as one of the state’s top teams and is 6-0 entering a vicious stretch of games to close the regular season. The Mountain Lions host No. 3 American Leadership Academy this week and will also take on No. 15 Queen Creek, No. 5 Hamilton and No. 9 Mountain View before entering postseason play.

7. Highland

Previous: No. 7
Highland is also coming off a bye week and will look to get back on track with a win against No. 20 Williams Field on Friday. The Hawks check in at 5-1 and have a pair of ranked victories on their résumé this season. Their defense now ranks No. 6 in the state per the Massey Ratings and has allowed more than 20 points just twice all year.

8. Chandler

Previous: No. 8
Chandler will look for its first win in four weeks on Friday when it heads to No. 19 Casteel for yet another ranked battle. The 4-2 Wolves are on a two-game skid with losses to No. 7 Highland and top-ranked Liberty. Like many others, Chandler is also facing a stout finish to the season with four ranked opponents left on the calendar. Games against No. 2 Basha and No. 5 Chandler are among those also on the horizon.

9. Mountain View

Previous: No. 9
Mountain View is 5-1 and has a clear path to finishing the regular season with nine wins. The Toros have just one ranked opponent — No. 6 Red Mountain — left on the docket. Their schedule hasn’t been nearly as tough as others in the state, but they still posses the No. 6 offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Mountain View hosts 3-3 Mesa this week.

10. Centennial

Previous: No. 11 (+1)
A disastrous 0-4 start saw preseason top-five Centennial take a massive drop in the state rankings, but it looks to have righted the ship via a two-game winning streak. The Coyotes beat No. 25 Saguaro by 10 points on the road two weeks ago and were idle last week. Despite the struggles, the defense still ranks No. 2 in the state, per the Massey Ratings. Centennial heads to No. 15 Queen Creek for another big test this week.
