The 2024 Arizona high school football season is now through five weeks and the top programs in the Grand Canyon State are continuing to emerge.
Liberty and Basha remain the top two teams in the state entering the first week of October. Highland is now No. 3 following a big victory over Chandler.
Below are the updated top programs in the state of Arizona, as of Sept. 30.
The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Liberty
Previous: No. 1
Liberty was off last week after suffering its first loss of the season to Corona (Calif.) Centennial on Sept. 21. The 3-1 Lions have looked like the top team in the state thus far and will look to get back on track this Friday when they head to No. 7 Chandler. The On3 Massey Ratings predict a 35-28 win for Liberty.
2. Basha
Previous: No. 2
After giving nationally-ranked Mission Viejo (Calif.) a run for its money two weeks ago, Basha returned to the win column over the weekend by smashing Sandra Day O’Connor 58-21. The Bears are now 4-1 and are entering a brutal stretch of games that begins with No. 4 Brophy on the road this weekend and also features No. 5 Hamilton and No. 7 Chandler later in October.
3. Highland
Previous: No. 6 (+3)
Highland landed its biggest win of the season over the weekend, besting No. 7 Chandler 20-14. With the win the Hawks are now 5-0 and continue to boast one of the top defenses in the state. They’ve allowed an average of 11 points per game thus far. Another tough test awaits this Thursday, as the Hawks head to No. 8 Red Mountain for a battle of undefeated programs.
4. Brophy Prep
Previous: No. 4
Brophy continues to rack up ranked victories in-state. It now has four on the season following its 40-0 win over Notre Dame Prep last week. The Broncos are battle-tested but have come out unscathed thus far. It doesn’t stop this week, either, as No. 2 Basha heads to Phoenix later this week. The Massey Ratings aren’t backing Brophy, predicting a 39-19 win for the visitors.
5. Hamilton
Previous: No. 5
Hamilton continues to up the ante on offense and has now eclipsed 50 points in its last two outings. The Huskies are now 5-0 after rolling over Surprise Valley Vista 58-0 on the road last weekend and now have the No. 4 offense in the state, per the Massey Ratings. They’re one of the few top programs idle this week and are set to return on Oct. 11 for a massive matchup at No. 2 Basha.
6. Queen Creek American Leadership Academy
Previous: No. 7 (+1)
The Patriots remain undefeated following a 34-19 road victory over No. 15 Pinnacle last weekend. Allowing 9.8 points per game, American Leadership Academy now has three ranked wins on the season and has ample opportunity to add to its résumé, beginning with another home test against No. 21 Phoenix Mountain Pointe on Friday.
7. Chandler
Previous: No. 3 (-4)
Chandler’s three-game road trip finished with a 20-14 loss at No. 3 Highland, its first defeat of the 2024 campaign. Now 4-1, the Wolves have a chance to make a big statement this Friday as No. 1 Liberty comes to town. Chandler’s defense ranks No. 2 in the state, per the Massey Ratings.

Red Mountain defeated No. 18 Williams Field 52-28 on the road over the weekend to remain undefeated. Their toughest test of the season thus far is set for Thursday as they host No. 3 Highland.
9. Mountain View
Previous: No. 9
Mountain View’s lone loss of the season came to No. 1 Liberty earlier this season, but the Toros have looked the part offensively, averaging 47.6 points per game, propelling them to a 4-1 record. They blanked Desert Ridge 54-0 over the weekend and will look for their third win in a row on Thursday night against 4-1 Westwood.
10. Higley
Previous: No. 10
Higley is coming off an exciting 56-50 shootout win on the road over Cactus Shadows and is now 4-1 on the season. Like many others in the Grand Canyon State, the Knights have impressed on offense but been leaky on defense. They’ll look for their second ranked win in 2024 next Friday when they head to Gilbert North ALA on Oct. 11.
