Bishop Ireton Cardinals win The Throne girls basketball tournament

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals are the queens of The Throne girls basketball tournament after defeating the Sidwell Friends Quakers 61-44. The nation’s 11th best team kept on building their lead after finishing the first quarter with a one-point deficit. Bishop Ireton’s victory looks more impressive, considering they were down by as many as eight points in the first six minutes.
Virginia’s second-best team this season reached the championship game after one-point victory over top-ranked Bishop McNamara Lady Mustangs 43-42. Meanwhile, the Quakers outclassed the Morris Catholic Crusaders 62-48.
Sidwell Friends isn’t an easy opponent. They are the nation’s 14th-best girls basketball team, based on the On3 Composite Team Rankings. However, the Cardinals made it look easy after dominating the last three quarters of their showdown.
Bishop Ireton limited the Quakers to nine points in the second quarter, 12 in the third, and ten in the fourth. Conversely, the Cardinals scored 49 points in the final three chapters to lift The Throne girls basketball championship.

Nyla Brooks was the Finals Most Valuable Player after tallying 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Amirah Anderson added 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Theresa Hagans contributed 11 points, five assists, and four steals.
The Cardinals capitalized on the Quakers’ mistakes, resulting in 23 points off turnovers. Bishop Ireton also had more points in the paint (30-24), as well as second chance points (11-5). Likewise, they converted five of 12 three-point attempts. Meanwhile, winning The Throne is a nice addition to their achievements, especially after taking home the Virginia Division 1 girls basketball state championship.
On the other hand, Jordyn Jackson led Sidwell Friends with 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Genesis Schneeberg and Ava Yoon added nine points each. Despite the defeat, the Quakers still ranked 14th in the National On3 Composite Team Rankings.
