As the boys high school basketball season progresses into the new year, teams across the state of California rank as some of the nation’s best programs.

Roosevelt is the No. 1 squad in the Golden State this week, according to the California On3 Composite Rankings. Harvard-Westlake and St. John Bosco round out the top three after solid performances in holiday tournaments.

The On3 Composite High School Basketball Team Rankings is a proprietary algorithm that compiles rankings listed in the public domain by respected High School media and data companies. It includes Massey, MaxPreps, ESPN and SI, creating the industry’s most comprehensive and geographically balanced High School Team Ranking.

Here are the top 25 boys high school basketball teams in the updated California On3 Composite Rankings.

1. Roosevelt

Roosevelt has been dominant the entire season, the lone blemish on its 20-1 record coming in November against Brennan (Texas). Since then, the Mustangs have rattled off 16 consecutive wins, including a 56-55 overtime thriller against No. 3 St. John Bosco on Dec. 30. Up next for Roosevelt is Etiwanda on Jan. 11. Five-star combo guard Brayden Burries is the remaining uncommitted prospect in the state.

2. Harvard-Westlake

Harvard-Westlake has been impressive against one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Wolverines have won 18 games, dropping just one to Timpview (Utah) on Dec. 14. Since then, they have beaten the likes of Perry (Ariz.), Gonzaga (D.C.) and No. 10 De La Salle. Harvard-Westlake will hit the hardwood again on Jan. 14 on the road at Bishop Alemany. Small forward Nikolas Khamenia is a top-30 prospect and signed with Duke this fall.

3. St. John Bosco

St. John Bosco is 17-1 this season with its only loss coming to No.1 Roosevelt on Dec. 30. The Braves have picked up notable wins against out-of-state squads like Sandra Day O’Connor (Ariz.), Layton Christian (Utah) and Coronado (Nev.). They will play No. 14 Mater Dei on the road this evening.

4. Prolific Prep

The Crew notched a season-defining win early on against Columbus (Fla.) in a major upset. They also knocked off Utah Prep (Utah) — the home of No. 1 overall recruit AJ Dybantsa. Five-Star Plus+ shooting guard Darryn Peterson has signed with Kansas.

5. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame is an impressive 15-2 this season with recent wins over Sandra Day O’Connor (Ariz.) and Coronado (Nev.). The Knights lost twice in the month of December — once to No. 1 Roosevelt and another to Layton Christian (Utah). No. 8 Sierra Canyon is on deck for this evening.

6. Archbishop Riordan

Archbishop Riordan jumped out to a 9-0 start this season before falling to No. 9 JSerra Catholic on Dec. 30 52-47. The Crusaders bounced back earlier this week against Sacred Heart Cathedral and will get another shot at a victory tonight at Bellarmine College Prep.

7. St Joseph

Fifteen wins and just one loss on the season has St. Joseph sitting as one of the best teams in the state of California. The Knights have yet to play a top-25 team in the state and are not scheduled to do so the rest of the regular season. Senior SF Tounde Yessoufou is a top-20 recruit in the 2025 class and signed with Baylor.

8. Sierra Canyon

Sierra Canyon walks into this evening’s matchup with No. 5 Notre Dame with a 13-3 record. Its losses this season have come to Orem (Utah), Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) and Santa Barbara.

9. JSerra Catholic

Just under two weeks ago, JSerra pulled off a five-point win against No. 6 Archbishop Riordan — the highlight of the Lions’ resume thus far. No. 17 Santa Margarita is on the schedule for this evening.

10. De La Salle

De La Salle is 14-1 this season with recent wins over Duncanville (Texas) and Chaminade (Mo.) at Hoophall West. De La Salle lost in the tournament title to No. 2 Harvard-Westlake, but will look to bounce back on the road at Monte Vista Friday night.
