South Carolina QB signee Cutter Woods throws six touchdowns in state championship defeat
Anderson (S.C.) Westside star quarterback Cutter Woods did all he could on Friday night in the Class 4A SCHSL State Championship.
The South Carolina Gamecocks signee needed just 11 completions to rack up 411 yards and six touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to propel Westside to a state title, as it fell 42-41 to South Florence in an instant classic.
Woods’ receivers helped buff his stat line. Chamarryus Bomar was his right-hand man, as the senior was the recipient of four TD throws — which went for 38, 69, 56 and 56 yards. Dreson Evans also took a pass 74 yards to the house in the first quarter.
The game went back and forth all night. South Florence took a 42-35 lead with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Westside answered with a quick score, but went for a 2-point conversion that failed, leaving it down 42-41. The Rams eventually got the ball back at their own 1-yard line but weren’t able to find the miracle winning drive.
“South Florence is a great team, super happy for them, want to give them congratulations, I’m just thankful, thankful to be in the position, it’s by God’s grace that I’m here,” Woods told The State’s Lou Bezjak after the game. “This team, we’ve come so far, and to fall short definitely hurts, but I just want to give all the glory to God for letting us have this opportunity.”
