Final On3 Composite California High School Football Rankings
The 2024 high school football season in the state of California came to a close this month and the final On3 Composite Rankings have been released.
After winning the CIF Southern Section Division I title and the Open Division State title, undefeated Mater Dei once again reigns supreme in the Golden State.
Below are the final top 25 teams in California, according to the On3 Composite Rankings.
The On3 Composite High School Football Team Ranking is a proprietary algorithm that compiles rankings listed in the public domain by respected High School media and data companies. It includes Massey, Max Preps, Cal Preps, ESPN and SI, creating the industry’s most comprehensive and geographically balanced High School Team Ranking.
1. Mater Dei
The top team in the nation was never in doubt for the entire season. Mater Dei finished 13-0 and defeated seven of the other top 10 teams in the state, in addition to nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and St. Frances Academy (Md.). The Monarchs, loaded with talent, are sending nine seniors to Power Four programs, including cornerback Chuck McDonald (Alabama), CB Daryus Dixson (Penn State), linebacker Nasir Wyatt (Oregon) and running back Jordon Davison (Oregon).
2. St. John Bosco
The only team that was able to stop St. John Bosco this season was Mater Dei. The Braves finished 11-2, with their lone losses coming to the Monarchs in the regular season and the state title game. The Bellflower program still finished as the No. 6 team in the nation thanks to wins over the likes of Chaminade-Madonna (Fla.) and in-state Orange Lutheran, Sierra Canyon and JSerra Catholic. Bosco will be loaded with senior talent in 2025.
3. De La Salle
Very quietly, De La Salle made it to the No. 3 spot to the state rankings and also finishes as the No. 16 team in the nation. The Spartans didn’t have to play as tough a schedule as others in the top half of the rankings, but they still won their first 12 games before falling to top-ranked Mater Dei in the Open Division State title game. Blue-chip defensive lineman Matt Johnson now heads to Oregon after captaining the Spartan defense.
4. Centennial
The season started off rough for Centennial, as it was crushed by Mater Dei and then fell to Santa Margarita Catholic to open up 0-2. That was without a healthy five-star quarterback Husan Longstreet, however. Once the USC signee got back under center, things changed for the Huskies. They proceeded to win nine games in a row behind a potent offense before falling to Mater Dei in the Southern Section D1 semifinals. A quarterfinal victory over Mission Viejo was the biggest win of the year for the Corona program.
5. Orange Lutheran
Orange Lutheran played the nation’s second toughest schedule this season, per the Massey Ratings. That resulted in an 8-4 record the Lancers, headlined by wins over St. Frances Academy (Md.) and in-state Sierra Canyon, JSerra Catholic and Santa Margarita Catholic. Nebraska four-star QB signee TJ Lateef led the way for the Lancers — who fell to St. John Bosco in the Southern Section Division I playoff semifinals — this fall.
6. Mission Viejo
An undefeated regular season was spoiled in the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals, as Mission Viejo fell to Centennial. While that soured some things in 2024 for the Diablos, they still put together an impressive campaign that featured wins over Santa Margarita Catholic, Edison and Los Alamitos. Five-star cornerback Dijon Lee now heads to Alabama, while QB Luke Fahey and elite wide receiver Vance Spafford are set to return for a big senior season in 2025.
7. Sierra Canyon
After opening the season 2-3, Sierra Canyon found a groove heading into the postseason, winning its final six games of the regular season. The Trailblazers fell to top-ranked Mater Dei in the Southern Section D1 quarterfinals, wrapping up an 8-4 campaign. Plenty of the roster is set to return in 2025, including a pair of elite soon-to-be juniors in Richard Wesley and Havon Finney.

8. Santa Margarita Catholic
Not far behind Orange Lutheran was Santa Margarita Catholic, which played the nation’s fifth toughest schedule in 2024. Despite finishing the season 5-7, the Eagles still finish inside the top 10 in the Golden State. SMC’s biggest victories this fall came over Centennial, Servite and Oaks Christian. Its losses came to the likes of Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Orange Lutheran and Mission Viejo.
9. JSerra Catholic
After reaching as high as No. 3 in the state rankings, JSerra Catholic’s season came to an ugly end, as it lost five of its last six games to finish 6-5. Once again, the Lions played many of the best teams in the state and still landed wins over Sierra Canyon, Lincoln and Santa Margarita Catholic. Elite senior linebacker Madden Faraimo signed with Notre Dame earlier this month.
10. Lincoln
Led by Oregon four-star quarterback signee Akili Smith Jr., Lincoln won the CIF Division 1-AA state title game earlier this month, defeating Pittsburg. The Hornets finished the season with a 12-2 record and now finish inside the top 10 after a dominant 10-game winning streak to finish the year. Along with Pittsburg, Lincoln’s biggest wins include Newbury Park, Grant Union and Los Alamitos.
