Final On3 Composite Ohio High School Football Rankings: Dec. 18
The 2024 high school football season in the state of Ohio came to a close earlier this month and the final On3 Composite Rankings have been released.
After winning the Division II title, the undefeated Avon Eagles finish as the top-ranked team in the Buckeye State.
Below are the final top 25 teams in Ohio after yet another eventful season of high school football.
The On3 Composite High School Football Team Ranking is a proprietary algorithm that compiles rankings listed in the public domain by respected High School media and data companies. It includes Massey, Max Preps, Cal Preps, ESPN and SI, creating the industry’s most comprehensive and geographically balanced High School Team Ranking.
1. Avon
Avon defeated Cincinnati Anderson 20-13 on Dec. 5 in the Division II title game — which came down to the wire. The battle of undefeated programs saw the Eagles come out on top after deflecting a pass in the end zone to end the game. Finishing the year 16-0, Avon won four one-score games between plenty of blowouts. The Eagles check in at No. 29 nationally.
2. Archbishop Moeller
The Cincinnati powerhouse was denied another Division I state title by Olentangy Liberty, losing 28-14 to finish the season with a 14-2 record. The Crusaders were once again impressive, led by junior quarterback Matt Ponatoski, who was named Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year. Moeller eclipsed 40 points in a game 10 times this fall and will likely be the frontrunner to return to the top of the mountain in 2025.
3. Olentangy Liberty
One of, if not the best defense in the state propelled Olentangy Liberty to a dominant 14-2 season, capped by an impressive 14-point win over Moeller to claim its first state title. The Patriots out of Powell allowed more than 20 points in a game just twice all season. They are also now the No. 78 team nationally, per the On3 Composite.
4. Archbishop Hoban
Archbishop Hoban’s season was cut short by eventual Division II champs Avon, but the Knights still put together a 12-3 campaign that included a seven-game winning streak that bled into the playoffs. Hoban is loaded with talent and will likely welcome three blue-chip prospects back for their senior seasons in 2025, most notably elite four-star cornerback Elbert Hill.
5. Cincinnati Anderson
Anderson took the Division II title game down to the wire but was unable to complete a pass as time expired, falling to Avon in a 20-13 defensive slog. The Raptors won their first 15 games of the season, allowing less than 10 points in seven of their first eight outings this fall. They finish the year as the No. 92 team in the nation.
6. St. Xavier
While still checking in as a top-100 program nationally, a 10-4 campaign saw St. Xavier fall a tad short of its usual lofty goals in 2024. The Bombers were elite defensively but also succumbed to some shortcomings on the offensive side of the ball. They fell to Moeller in the Division I playoffs, ending what was a six-game winning streak.
7. Walsh Jesuit
A playoff loss to Archbishop Hoban axed what was a perfect season for Walsh Jesuit, as it won each of its first 13 games of the season. The Warriors ransacked their pedestrian schedule, eclipsing 40 points in eight games this fall. The program out of Stow finishes the year as the nation’s No. 104 team, per the On3 Composite.

8. Washington
A stunning 14-7 defeat in the Division II playoffs to Big Walnut stymied another chance at a state title for Washington, which finished the year with a 10-3 record. The Tigers suffered regular-season defeats to Northeast powers Bergen Catholic (N.J.) and DeMatha (Md.), but pummeled the remainder of its schedule until falling on Nov. 22 after scoring just one touchdown. Washington checks in as the No. 108 team in the nation.
9. Mentor
Mentor was another school that was dealt its first loss of the season during the playoffs, as it fell 13-6 to St. Edward in the Division I playoffs. The Cardinals won their first 13 games of the year, averaging over 39 points per game. Including the loss, Mentor allowed just 34 points across its final five games. It checks in at No. 116 nationally.
10. Bishop Watterson
The Division III state champs reside in Columbus, as Bishop Watterson put the finishing touches on an undefeated year by winning a 19-14 bout over Toledo Central Catholic earlier this month. The Eagles barreled through their fall slate, allowing more than 14 points in a game just once all season long. Watterson finishes as the No. 130 team nationally.
