Former NFL Player Embarks On New Jersey High School Football Coaching Role
The Delbarton Green Wave, a New Jersey high school football team competing in the Non-Public A Division, welcomed former NFL player Nick Mangold as their offensive line coach. The young men in the trenches will learn from a pro football icon who was among the league’s best centers during his heyday.
Fox 5 New York’s Jennifer Williams wrote that Mangold found inspiration in coaching from the weekend flag football league his kids attended. Delbarton’s head coach, Brian Bowers, organizes the tournament. Mangold’s wife, Jennifer, proposed coaching high school kids. After all, Mangold has been coaching his kids on basketball, a sport he hasn’t played competitively.
The 29th overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft reached out to accept Bowers’ offer, starting the next phase of his football career. The offensive lineman from Ohio will impart countless wisdom to his wards, who have much room for improvement. The former Ohio State standout will mentor prospects like Peter Domini, Andrew Covello, Max Markho, Matthew Shivas, Quinten Mogila, and Lorenzo Petrucci, among others.
Mangold’s choice to join Delbarton isn’t random because he was a cornerstone of the New York Jets offensive line from 2006 to 2016. While the team’s name says New York, they have played their home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Jets Ring of Honor member has three All-Pro and seven Pro Bowl selections. His efforts helped the Jets make three playoff appearances, including two consecutive trips to the American Football Conference championship game. Likewise, Mangold’s command of the Jets blocking scheme allowed Thomas Jones and Chris Ivory to become 1,000-yard rushers. Mangold retired in 2016 after playing 171 career games.
Meanwhile, Delbarton is one of the top competitors in New Jersey high school football. They finished the 2024 season with a 7-3 record, including a 5-0 record in the Super-United White League. However, their Non-Public A postseason journey ended with a first-round loss to St. Augustine Prep, 9-7.
