Georgia kicked off the 2024 high school football season last week, as many of the top programs in the Peach State were in action — even though Mother Nature tried to say otherwise.

Plenty of interesting results followed. Milton and Langston Hughes each won nationally-ranked matchups, while top-five programs Colquitt County, Mill Creek and Carrollton opened their respective campaigns 1-0.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue to begin their quests to a state title. Below are the top 25 teams in Georgia, according to the On3 Massey Ratings, as of Aug. 19.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

*Win-Loss records are 0-0 unless noted otherwise.

1. Colquitt County (1-0)

Colquitt County, the No. 25 team nationally, opened its season with a comfortable 45-28 win over Salt Lake City West (Utah). The Packers continue their early home stand on Friday, as Monroe — which lost by 47 points in its first game of the year — visits from Albany.

2. Alpharetta Milton (1-0)

Following a lengthy weather delay, Milton was able to outlast Buford 13-10 in the biggest game of the week to open the season. As a result, the Eagles jumped six spots and are now gunning for the No. 1 ranking in the state. Another challenge awaits on Friday as they travel to Florida to take on American Heritage (Fla.) in the ESPN High School Football Kickoff. The Patriots are a top-100 team nationally.

3. Hoschton Mill Creek (1-0)

After defeating Lambert handily on the road 56-26 last week, Mill Creek is now set to head to Norcross for a top-30 matchup on Friday. The Hawks are projected to win by 22 points. Norcross began its season with a 21-point road win at Lanier.

4. Fairburn Langston Hughes (1-0)

The Panthers’ offense was electric last weekend in its 52-21 rout of Atlanta Westlake, earning them a seven-spot jump in the rankings. The prospect-loaded roster will look to keep things going on Friday against Mays, a top-50 program in the state.

5. Carrollton (1-0)

USC five-star quarterback commit Julian Lewis didn’t put up gaudy numbers in his season debut on ESPN, but Carrollton fought past rain and a gritty Woodward Academy team for a 24-14 win on the road. The Trojans’ home opener is set for Friday night against Columbia out of Decatur.

6. Coffee (1-0)

Coffee overpowered Bainbridge last week, cruising to a 59-6 victory. The Trojans are the only team in Georgia set to host a ranked matchup in the coming days, as they’ll host No. 14 Ware County in a big early-season showdown.

7. Marietta Walton (1-0)

It wasn’t easy for Walton in the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic inside Mercedes Benz Stadium last week, but it got the job done against a game Brookwood bunch, 30-21. The Raiders are back home and will welcome Lambert to town following its blowout loss to Mill Creek.

8. Thomas County Central (1-0)

The Yellow Jackets demolished Monroe 54-7 to start 2024 off on the right foot. Another home outing is set for Friday, as Thomas County Central hosts Cairo for its first game of the season.

9. Lee County (1-0)

Another group of Trojans that began the season 1-0, Lee County was too much for Warner Robins last week as it claimed a 45-28 win. Running back Ousmane Kromah collected over 150 total yards in the victory, looking like one of the top players in the state in the process. Hapeville Charter will head to Leesburg this Friday.

10. Suwanee Collins Hill (1-0)

Collins Hill delivered the biggest upset of the opening weekend, stunning preseason No. 6 Grayson on its home turf, storming back from a 16-point deficit at halftime and waiting through a lighting delay to claim a massive 20-19 victory. As a result, the Eagles moved up 15 spots and are now a top-10 club. They’ll make their home debut on Friday against Woodward Academy.
