Georgia High School Football

Georgia will be one of the final states to begin postseason play, as the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) pushed the schedule back a week due to cancellations and postponements caused by Hurricane Helene earlier this fall.

Many teams in the Peach State took the field for their final regular season game over the weekend, while some still have one game to go before beginning the last march towards a state title.

Below are the updated top 25 teams in the state of Georgia, according to the On3 Massey Ratings, as of Nov. 3:

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

1. Lee County

Previous: No. 1
Behind the No. 1 offense in the state, Lee County finished the regular season undefeated over the weekend by defeating Houston County 63-48. The 10-0 Trojans picked up five wins over top-30 in-state programs this season and will now look to continue to thrash defenses in the postseason, which begins on Nov. 15. Lee County has been held to under 45 points just once this season.

2. Carrollton

Previous: No. 2
Not to be outdone, Carrollton will also enter the season undefeated at 10-0 following a 49-28 win at Douglas County this week. Led by USC quarterback commit Julian Lewis, the Trojans have been a force all season, gliding through its schedule, scoring at least 40 points in each of its final eight games. Their offense ranks No. 2 in the state, while the defense checks in at No. 6, per the Massey Ratings.

3. Milton

Previous: No. 3
Milton ran through Roswell 35-20 to also join the 10-0 club this week. From a prospect standpoint, the Eagles have the most stacked offense in the state, spearheaded by Miami quarterback commit Luke Nickel and Georgia tight end commit Ethan Barbour. Milton’s defense ranks No. 3 in the state and has allowed more than 20 points in a game just twice this season.

4. Buford

Previous: No. 4
After opening the season with a loss to No. 3 Milton, Buford rattled off nine wins in a row and looks the part of a state title contender entering November. The Wolves rolled past a ranked Mill Creek squad 32-7 over the weekend and haven’t allowed more than two touchdowns in a game since Sept. 6. Their defense now ranks No. 1 in the state, per the Massey Ratings.

5. Thomas County Central

Previous: No. 5
Thomas County Central will enter the playoffs on a high note, as it drilled No. 14 Coffee 38-7 at home to finish the regular season at 9-1, with its sole loss coming on the road at top-ranked Lee County. The Yellow Jackets haven’t played the toughest schedule, but they’re the only team in the state with a top-five offense and defense in the Massey Ratings.

6. North Cobb

Previous: No. 6
While its strength of schedule ranks No. 40 in the state, North Cobb has taken care of business behind a top-five offense and will enter the postseason undefeated at 10-0. The Warriors defeated Wheeler 49-14 last time out and also possess an impressive defense that hasn’t given up more than 20 points in each of its last seven games.

7. North Gwinnett

Previous: No. 7
North Gwinnett navigated through a challenging first few weeks of the season, proceeded to cruise through the back half and is now 10-0 after walloping Duluth 50-7 on the road. The Bulldogs have been able to lean on their offense and defense all year, creating a well-rounded group that could make some noise in the playoffs in a couple of weeks.

8. Grayson

Previous: No. 8
Grayson was one of the teams impacted the hardest by postponements due to the hurricane and other events, as it went through a five-week span without taking the field for a game. The Rams have managed to push through and are now 7-1 after a 45-14 win over Archer this week. They’ll now play two games this coming week, first hosting Heritage on Nov. 5 before heading to Newton on Nov. 8. Plenty remains at stake for the preseason top-10 squad.

9. Langston Hughes

Previous: No. 10 (+1)
Langston Hughes closed the regular season on a seven-game winning streak, capped off by a 42-6 drubbing of Lovejoy at home this week. The Panthers benefited from a mediocre schedule and are 9-1, with their lone loss coming to No. 10 Douglas County back in early September. Hughes still possesses a top-10 offense and defense in the state, per the Massey Ratings.

10. Douglas County

Previous: No. 9 (-1)
It was a sour end to the regular season for Douglas County as it couldn’t take down No. 2 Carrollton in a 49-28 defeat. The Tigers are now 8-2 but still possess a top-15 offense and defense and still have everything to play for this month. They’ve played the fifth-hardest schedule in the state this season, per the Massey Ratings.
