Georgia High School Football

After another week of Georgia high school football ended with plenty of eye-catching results, the top 25 rankings have once again updated.

Milton and Carrollton remain at the top, but Lee County is the week’s big riser following a big ranked victory. Just one new team entered the rankings ahead of week six in the Peach State.

Below are this week’s top 25 teams in the state of Georgia, per the On3 Massey Ratings.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — four teams from Alabama rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Milton

Previous: No. 1
Milton was tested on the road last week against Blessed Trinity Catholic, but the top-ranked Eagles once again persevered and picked up a 14-point win to improve to 4-0. Despite having Miami QB commit Luke Nickel and a wave of weapons on offense, the defense has been the star of the show for Milton thus far, allowing just 52 points in four games this season.

2. Carrollton

Previous: No. 2
Led by USC QB commit Julian Lewis, Carrollton continues to look unstoppable on the offensive side of the ball so far. The Trojans blasted ranked Gainesville for a 45-16 win last week to improve to 5-0. Lewis and Co. have now scored 40 points or more in three consecutive games. The Trojans head to Alabama this weekend for a big out-of-state clash against Birmingham Parker.

3. Lee County

Previous: No. 18 (+15)
According to the Massey Ratings, the No. 1 offense in Georgia currently resides in Lee County. The Trojans went on the road and out-dueled a ranked Colquitt County team for a 47-35 win. Led by RB Ousmane Kromah, Lee County (4-0) is now averaging over 53 points per game to begin the season. A potential top-five matchup against Thomas County Central later this month looms large.

4. Buford

Previous: No. 7 (+3)
Buford has now won two ranked matchups in a row following an impressive 31-14 win on the road over Douglas County. QB Dayton Raiola, the brother of current Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola, looks to have figured things out under center while the Wolves’ defense has continued to improve early on in the season. Buford hosts top-10 Collins Hill early next month.

5. Thomas County Central

Previous: No. 5
Thomas County Central is now 5-0 after steamrolling Bainbridge to the tune of a 63-7 victory. While the competition has been far from stout (No. 89 strength of schedule in the state), the Yellow Jackets have answered the bell with ease every time. They will be idle this week as the Sept. 27 matchup on the road at No. 3 Lee County looks to be one of the biggest games in the state this fall.

6. North Gwinnett

Previous: No. 4 (-2)
The Bulldogs finally made their season debut at home last week and landed a 26-point win over Brookwood to improve to 4-0. North Gwinnett has been one of the top surprises in Georgia thus far, thanks to wins over Colquitt County and Mill Creek, propelling it as high as No. 4 in the state last week.

7. Grayson

Previous: No. 8 (+1)
Grayson now has a pair of impressive wins outside of its home state this season following a 28-14 road win over Mallard Creek, the No. 5 team in North Carolina. Junior QB Travis Burgess threw two early touchdowns that helped build a 21-point lead at halftime. The Rams’ defense did the rest, improving their record to 3-1. Grayson was idle last week and returns on Friday for a home bout against Grovetown.

8. Coffee

Previous: No. 6 (-2)
Coffee picked up an out-of-state win last week by defeating Gadsden County (Fla.), 28-14. Now 4-0 on the season, the Trojans are favored to win the next two games on their schedule before an October toad test at Lee County, according to the Massey Ratings. Coffee’s defense currently ranks No. 4 in the state heading into this weekend.

9. Collins Hill

Previous: No. 9
The Eagles haven’t been impressive on offense so far this season, but they haven’t needed to be. The Collins Hill defense hasn’t allowed 20 points in each of its four wins thus far, with the latest effort resulting in a 27-10 win on the road over Parkview in Lilburn. They’ll look to make it five wins in a row this week at home against Central Gwinnett.

10. Douglas County

Previous: No. 3 (-7)
Douglas County’s fiery start was put to a halt by Buford last weekend as the Tigers were dealt their first loss of the 2024 season. Now 4-1, they enter a bye week and are set to return on Sept. 27 on the road at Columbia in Decatur. Douglas County checks in with the No. 11 defense in the state and is still on track to finish as one of Georgia’s best this fall.
