Cal QB commit Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele breaks Hawaii all-time passing yardage record
Some of the most prolific passers in college football history over the past few decades have played their high school football in Hawaii.
Prior to starring at the University of Hawaii, Timmy Chang rewrote the state record books. More have since followed, including former UCF star McKenzie Milton, current Oregon QB Dillion Gabriel — one of the frontrunners for this year’s Heisman trophy — and Miami Dolphins signal-caller and former Heisman winner Tua Tagovailoa.
But none of them hold the record for career passing yards in the state. That honor now belongs to California commit and four-star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
The Campbell High star broke Gabriel’s previous record (10,048) over the weekend, and now has a chance to run away from him even further as the playoffs begin.
For his high school career, Sagapolutele has completed 679 of 1,049 attempts (65%), while throwing for 10,246 yards and 113 touchdowns. He is currently tied with Chang for the career TD passes mark, but should break that in the next few weeks.
Arguably the most impressive part of his feat is that Sagapolutele has broken Gabriel’s record in seven fewer games and has played the second-fewest of any quarterback on the list.

Oregon, Georgia among schools push to flip Sagapolutele
Since a standout performance at this summer’s Elite 11 Finals, where Sagapolutele was added to the roster to fill in for another injured player, he has seen his recruitment explode. He committed to the Golden Bears in June, but Oregon and Georgia have both made him a top flip priority.
The Ducks are currently favored to land him by the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).
“He was able to get to Eugene on Friday for his official visit and I like the way it’s trending for Oregon as they aim to sign two quarterbacks this cycle — already have Akili Smith Jr. in the fold and Jaron is a top-of-the-board target regardless of position down the stretch,” On3 VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong said on the latest edition of the ‘Wiltfong Whiparound’.
Georgia isn’t relenting in their pursuit of him, though, and the Bulldogs are expected to host him for an official visit later this month.
Sagapolutele is the No. 167 overall prospect and No. 12 QB in the 2025 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
