Montverde Academy (Fla.) hires head coach away from D.C.-area powerhouse

One of the top jobs in all of high school basketball is filled, as Florida’s Montverde Academy has found its replacement for longtime head coach Kevin Boyle, who departed earlier this month for another job.
Gonzaga College Prep (D.C.) head coach Steve Turner will now take over at Montverde after 20 years as the head coach at Gonzaga, dating all the way back to 2004. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Gonzaga for six years.
“It is with deep appreciation and utmost respect for this amazing community that I share this news. At the end of the 2024-25 basketball season, I was offered an opportunity to take my career to a new level as the next Head Coach of the Boys Varsity National Basketball team at Montverde Academy in Florida,” he wrote in an announcement on Twitter. “I have decided to accept the offer. Although this opportunity presented itself quickly, I did not make my decision lightly.
… I’ve spent half of my life on Eye Street, committed to serving as a Man for Others. I have given my heart and soul to Gonzaga for 26 years; and, in turn, Gonzaga has helped to shape me into the coach, mentor, father, and person that I am today. I will be forever grateful to my colleagues, students, and the parents who have supported me and helped me soar to great heights while at Gonzaga. And, while I’m looking forward to seeing how high these Eagle’s Wings will take me, Gonzaga will always have a special place in my heart.”
This season, Turner led the Eagles to a 29-5 record and a top-10 national ranking in the On3 Composite High School Basketball Team Rankings. They also took home a DCSAA Class AA title, defeating Sidwell Friends 67-51 in the finals.

Over his two decades at the helm, Turner has amassed a 497-176 record and turned Gonzaga into one of the East Coast’s premier high school basketball programs. He’ll take over a Montverde program that has competed for national titles on a yearly basis and regularly recruits some of the top prep players in the country to play for them.
The 2024-25 roster featured multiple top-100 recruits and Power 5 signees, while previous Montverde alums include Cooper Flagg, Derik Queen, Liam McNeeley, Ben Simmons, Cade Cunningham, D’Angelo Russell, RJ Barrett and more.
Turner will have large shoes to fill replacing Boyle, who left to take over at Ohio’s SPIRE Academy, a prep school looking to emulate the success of IMG Academy. Boyle led Montverde to eight of the past 12 national championships and coached three No. 1 NBA draft picks, as well as dozens of other future NBA stars during his time at Montverde after arriving in 2011.
