Bishop Gorman (Nev.) picked up right where it left off last season, opening the 2024 campaign with a convincing 33-7 victory over Kahuku, the No. 1 team in Hawaii, on Friday night at home in Las Vegas.

The Gaels, who entered the season ranked No. 7 in the nation per the On3 Massey Ratings , used two quarterbacks and benefitted from multiple Kahuku mistakes and turnovers along the way. The Red Raiders entered the game ranked No. 18 nationally.

Junior four-star athlete Jett Washington collected a pair of interceptions, leading the way on defense. Junior quarterback Maika Eugenio capitalized in the red zone with two one-yard sneaks for scores, while senior LSU wide receiver commit Derek Meadows looked impressive hauling in multiple big catches.

Four interceptions from Kahuku QBs, a safety and a fumbled punt made Gorman’s night much easier, as the Nevada powerhouse has now won 26 consecutive games, dating back to the 2022 season.

Bishop Gorman headlines national HSFB schedule next week

Eyes now turn to a national clash for the Gaels (1-0) next weekend. Gorman will make the trip to Florida to take on No. 20 St. Thomas Aquinas (0-0) as a part of the 2024 ESPN High School Football Kickoff on Aug. 24. The game is set to air at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Both rosters will feature multiple ranked prospects in a battle of East versus West. Aquinas won 14 games and a state title in 2023 and is the preseason No. 3 team in the Sunshine State to open 2024, per the On3 Massey Ratings. The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

Following the clash in Florida, Bishop Gorman will head home to gear up for another major road matchup at Mater Dei (Calif.), the No. 1 team in the nation, on Sept. 6.

Kahuku (1-1) will return to action at home on Sunday, Aug. 25 against Konawaena (Hi.).
