Illinois High School Football Rankings

The Illinois high school football rankings have updated heading into the second week of October.

Upsets littered the Land of Lincoln scoreboard over the weekend. Chicago Mount Carmel fell to Brother Rice in a 16-13 thriller. Geneva Community went on the road and dominated Batavia, while Nazareth Academy did the same to St. Rita and Fremd beat Barrington by three scores.

The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.

Below is the updated Illinois On3 Massey Ratings top 25, as of Oct. 7.

1. East St. Louis

East St. Louis hammered Belleville-West 63-10 to improve to 6-0 on the season and stay atop the Illinois high school football rankings. Mizzou defensive back commit Charles Bass leads a defense that ranks No. 3 in Illinois. The Flyers are 45-point favorites against Alton.

2. Lincoln-Way East

The No. 3 offense in the state is led by junior Oregon quarterback commit Jonas Williams and has scored at least 48 points in every game thus far this season. Last week, it did so in a 48-14 win over Neuqua Valley. The Griffons will be at home against Lockport Township HS this Friday.

3. Chicago Mount Carmel

Brother Rice pulled off the upset of the week on Friday by knocking off No. 3 Mount Carmel 16-13. Mount Carmel entered the game as 23-point favorites over Brother Rice and had won four straight since dropping its opening game of the season to Hun School (N.J.). The Caravan will look to bounce back against No. 20 Joliet Catholic Academy this weekend.

4. Loyola Academy (+1)

Loyola moved up one spot in the rankings after beating St. Ignatius 27-6 on the road. The preseason No. 1 in the state of Illinois, Loyola Academy has stumbled twice through five games. The Ramblers lost the opening game of the year to now-No. 1 East St. Louis before falling to St. Francis two weeks later. Up next is a Saturday showdown with Providence Catholic.

5. Downers Grove North (+4)

Downers Grove North got out to a 5-0 start this season against a schedule that had seen no games against ranked opponents. That changed this past weekend. The Trojans blasted No. 16 York Comm 35-14 and accordingly jumped up four spots in the state rankings. Another tough matchup is on deck this week when No. 9 Lyons comes to town.

6. Cary-Grove (+1)

Cary-Grove stayed perfect with a 48-7 win over Hampshire. The Trojans have the No. 11 offense and No. 11 defense and will travel to Huntley this week for a top-50 road test.

7. Batavia (-3)

Batavia dropped its first game of the year over the weekend, losing 30-7 at home to then-No. 16 Geneva Community. The loss came the week after the Bulldogs dominated previously ranked Wheaton North 41-0. Batavia will look to bounce back this week against St Charles East.

9. Lyons (+1)

Lyons improved to 6-0 with a 49-14 win over River Forest over the weekend ahead of its clash with No. 5 Downers Grove North this Friday. The Lions are two-touchdown underdogs. They boast a top-15 defense while the Lyons offense sits outside of the top 25.

10. Nazareth Academy (+4)

Nazareth entered last week as 14-point underdogs to No. 6 St. Rita. But the Roadrunners went on the road on Friday and dominated the Mustangs for a 45-21 win to improve to 5-1. Nazareth and Indiana safety commit Garrett Reese will rest this week before playing Benet Academy on Oct. 18.
