While Indiana is primarily known as a basketball state, the talent among Indiana high school football teams is no pushover. That’s why some teams in the Indiana On3 Massey Ratings top 25 list as of Oct. 14 are among the nation’s best squads.

The competition gets tighter as these teams compete for a playoff spot. That’s why only seven out of 25 teams remain undefeated. Four are in the top ten, including the team yet to relinquish the top spot throughout the season.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model, four teams from Indiana rank in the top 100 nationwide.

1. Brownsburg

It’s eight up, eight down for the Bulldogs after a close victory over Noblesville 22-18. Avin Robinson was the game’s best player, tallying three receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Iosua Stephens and Oscar Frye had a touchdown pass each, while Brady Lewis added a rushing score.

On defense, Quentin Russ Jr. had two interceptions against the Millers. Despite some close calls throughout the season, Brownsburg remains unscathed. The 17th-best team in the country will try to complete a perfect regular season against a gritty Hamilton Southeastern squad this week and Avon next week.

2. Westfield

The Shamrocks have started another winning streak after their narrow defeat to top-ranked Brownsburg. Despite being the road team, they dominated 13th-ranked Fishers, courtesy of Deacon King’s 214 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Karson Fitzpatrick and Parker Knott added one touchdown each.

Meanwhile, Westfield’s top-ranked defense kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the first half. The unit finished the game with seven tackles for losses, two sacks, and 69 total tackles. The nation’s 45th-best squad will get 12th-ranked Franklin Central and Harrison in their succeeding games.

3. Lawrence North

No team has come close to defeating the Wildcats. Lawrence North’s smallest margin of victory in the 2024 Indiana high school football season is seven points, which occurred during their season-opening road game versus Lawrence Central.

Meanwhile, their latest result was a 13-point win over fifth-ranked Center Grove, wherein Izayveon Moore imposed his will with 235 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Monshun Sales had six catches for 113 yards, and the Wildcats defense completed 13 tackles for negative yardage. Only time can tell if the 53rd-best team in the United States can maintain this momentum against 16th-ranked Pike.

4. Cathedral

The Fighting Irish extended their winning streak to four games after a 35-6 domination of Roncalli. Cameron Koers threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Albren Johnson finished with two receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Against the Royals, the Indiana high school football’s fourth-best defense generated six tackles for losses and two sacks. However, it might be tricky for the 88th-best team in the USA to win their fifth straight because they will visit sixth-ranked Warren Central this week.

5. Center Grove

The Trojans are on a two-game skid following losses to fourth-ranked Cathedral and 15th-ranked Lawrence Central. However, Center Grove still had commendable performers against the Wildcats, including Tristan Baxter, who finished with 91 receiving yards.

Nolan Rees had 81 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Drake McClurg added another rushing touchdown. The Trojans are raring to bounce back from their slump, and they’ll get a chance to do so versus St. Frances Academy, Maryland’s top-ranked team, on their Oct. 18 match.

6. Warren Central

After a disappointing loss to Lawrence North at home, the Warriors’ second-best defense was back on track after a 32-3 domination of Carmel. Warren Central’s defense gathered seven tackles for losses and an interception.

Meanwhile, the Warriors’ ground game trampled over the Greyhounds’ defense, tallying 229 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Out of that number, Kendall Garnett finished with 110 yards and a touchdown. However, Warren Central is back to the drawing board after this victory because they will compete with fourth-ranked Cathedral in a highly anticipated showdown.

7. Crown Point

The Bulldogs have outscored their last three opponents 124-14. They’ve had 40-point performances in those games, including their latest victory against Chesterton. The game was already out of reach by halftime after Crown Point scored 35 unanswered points.

Throughout the 2024 Indiana high school football season, the Bulldogs have allowed only one team to reach 20 points. They will likely keep Michigan City’s production low before getting Portage in a playoff showdown.

8. Hamilton Southeastern

Are the Royals running out of fumes late in the 2024 Indiana high school football regular season? After winning their first three games, they’ve lost three of their last five, including a 14-10 upset by 12th-ranked Franklin Central.

The low-scoring game means that Indiana’s fifth-ranked defense did their job. However, their offense couldn’t muster enough points to extend their winning streak to three games. Hamilton Southeastern can’t expect to win against top-ranked Brownsburg on Oct. 18 with the same effort.

9. Ben Davis

The Giants’ grueling strength of schedule kept them in the top ten despite having a losing record. However, they’ve won their last two games with a combined score of 85-37, including a 27-7 triumph over Lawrence Central.

While they’ve lost five of their eight games this season, Ben Davis still ranks fifth on offense and seventh on defense. The Giants can improve their standing by defeating North Central on the 18th. After that, they will have a playoff showdown against 16th-ranked Pike on Nov. 1.

10. New Palestine

The Dragons haven’t been challenged throughout the season. Their smallest victory margin is 21 points, and they scored 56 points in two games. Likewise, they’ve limited opponents to 8.3 points per game and have completed two shutouts.

Their latest conquest came against New Castle, wherein the Dragons scored 38 of their 44 points in the first half. New Palestine will wrap up the regular season against Delta before proceeding to their playoff match with Mt. Vernon a week later.
