The results from the seventh week of the 2024 Indiana high school football season have done little to impart seismic changes to the Indiana On3 Massey Ratings top 25 list as of Oct. 9. The top teams have held onto their spots, especially the top five teams which are among the nation’s top 100 squads.

However, to highlight the fierce battle in the state, only seven of the top 25 teams remain undefeated, while four have losing records. With the first round of games for October done, here’s how Indiana’s top teams fared against their counterparts.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model, five teams from Indiana rank in the top 100 nationwide.

1. Brownsburg

Despite being the road team, Brownsburg pounded the Zionsville Eagles with a season-high 66 points. That total alone is higher than their combined points against Fishers and Westfield. Oscar Frye threw for five touchdowns, while Avin Robinson had 87 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Scoring that many points earned them the top-ranked offense in Indiana. Therefore, there’s immense pressure for them to win by a massive margin at home versus Noblesville.

2. Westfield

The Shamrocks are back on the winning track, defeating Avon by 32 points. Deacon King lorded over the Orioles’ defense, tallying 108 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Westfield has Indiana high school football’s top-ranked defense, limiting opponents to 16.1 points per game. However, after rediscovering their winning ways, Westfield will face formidable opponents in No. 11 Fishers and No. 13 Franklin Central in the next two weeks.

3. Lawrence North

The Wildcats felt at home even if sixth-ranked Warren Central had the home-field advantage. Lawrence North cruised to a 33-7 victory and improved their record to 7-0. Tanner Aspeslet threw three touchdown passes, while Davion Chandler had 126 receiving yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Wildcats’ defense swarmed the Warriors with 18 tackles for negative yardage and six sacks. Lawrence North will put its undefeated record on the line in what could be an intense matchup against fourth-ranked Center Grove.

4. Center Grove

While the Trojans fought hard, they still fell short against Cathedral 49-45. This is Center Grove’s second loss this season against a top-five team. However, there are some commendable performances for Center Grove, especially Drake McClurg’s two rushing touchdowns and 117 receiving yards. However, if the Trojans will bounce back, they must upset Lawrence North and St. Frances Academy in their next two games.

5. Cathedral

The Fighting Irish survived the fierce challenge put up by Center Grove. Cathedral wouldn’t have done it without Xavier Dangerfield’s 196 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Devaughn Slaughter added 117 receiving yards and a touchdown. Cathedral can extend its winning streak to four games by defeating 24th-ranked Roncalli this week.

6. Warren Central

The Warriors suffered their first defeat of the 2024 Indiana high school football season while scoring the fewest points in their first seven games. That’s uncharacteristic of a squad that exceeded the 30-point mark in their three games. Meanwhile, Warren Central still has the state’s second-best defense despite surrendering 33 points to Lawrence North. The Warriors can bounce back by defeating Carmel and fifth-ranked Cathedral.

7. Hamilton Southeastern

The Royals have back-to-back victories after pulling off a road victory against Noblesville in the final minute of regulation. Carter Reed led the way with 157 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Vaughn Johnson tallied 93 yards and two rushing scores. While Hamilton Southeastern has momentum after consecutive wins, their schedule doesn’t get easier because they will face Franklin Central this week and top-ranked Brownsburg next week.

8. Crown Point

The Bulldogs maintained their undefeated run by shutting down La Porte 42-0. They’ve allowed only seven points in their last two outings, an improvement from the 20 they gave to Portage. Crown Point could run the table by dominating Chesterton Senior and Michigan City in their next two games.

9. Bishop Chatard

The Trojans improved their standing to 6-1 after dominating Andrean 39-14. That’s three straight victories for Bishop Chatard after their loss to Cathedral. They have found their rhythm as of late, which will be helpful in their match against Elder, Ohio’s 16th-ranked team, this week.

10. New Palestine

The Dragons have completed two consecutive shutouts against Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville. They’ve allowed only 52 points all season and haven’t allowed an opponent to reach the 20-point mark. New Palestine should continue their dominance against New Castle and Delta in their next two games.
