Despite the high stakes, Cocoa wide receiver Jayvan Boggs excelled during the Class 2A state semifinal against Cardinal Mooney. The senior wideout established the Florida high school football single-game record for receiving yards while helping his team win.
In their 31-21 victory over the Cougars, Boggs finished the game with 378 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Ryan Sousa held the previous record with 358 receiving yards in a 2013 game for Lake Nona.
As Florida Today’s Jon Santucci reported, Boggs caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from the Tigers’ third play in their opening drive. Cardinal Mooney found no answers for him as Boggs surpassed the 200-yard mark by halftime. Boggs was responsible for 18 of the Tigers’ 31 points after completing touchdown catches of eight and 24 yards.
In addition to the single-game receiving yards record, Boggs can also establish another Florida high school football record. After the Cardinal Mooney game, he had 93 receptions for 2,020 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Boggs will need 140 yards to break the single-season yards record set by Venice High School’s Jaivin Heiligh in 2017. The chase for another entry in the state’s record books continues in the Florida Class 2A state championship game against Gadsden County on Dec. 12.

Meanwhile, Boggs’ career game elevated quarterback Brady Hart’s output against Cardinal Mooney to 32 completions for 508 passing yards. More importantly, their record improved to 10-3 while keeping their title hopes alive.
After defeating the Cougars, Cocoa became Florida’s ninth-best team according to the state’s On3 Composite Team Rankings. The Tigers are also the 91st-best team in the nation based on the same rankings. Meanwhile, Cocoa is 13th, while Gadsden County is eighth in the Florida On3 Massey Ratings.
Despite their impressive status, the Tigers will face the Jaguars, ranked 15th in the composite rankings. Leading Cocoa to the state championship will be a storybook ending for Jayvan Boggs before joining Florida State.
