The high school basketball season is well underway, and with holiday tournaments now in the rearview, top teams across the nation are beginning to emerge.

In Kentucky, four schools are currently top-200 teams nationally, according to the On3 Composite Rankings. St. Xavier maintains the top spot in the Bluegrass as schedules begin to ramp up once again.

Below are the top 25 high school basketball teams in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as of Jan. 10.

The On3 Composite Rankings is a proprietary algorithm that compiles rankings listed in the public domain by respected High School media and data companies. It includes Massey, Max Preps, HSRatings (formerly Cal Preps), ESPN and SI, creating the industry’s most comprehensive and geographically balanced High School Team Ranking.

1. St. Xavier

St. Xavier looks well on its way to matching last season’s 29-win campaign, as it is currently 13-2 on the year. The Tigers have proven their worth and then some already, notching ranked in-state wins over Great Crossing, Woodford County, Bowling Green and Frederick Douglass. They’ll look to power through a January slate that features games against fellow Louisville powers Male and Trinity.

2. Great Crossing

After taking some lumps at the City of Palms Classic against a stacked national field last month, Great Crossing is 11-4 on the year and looks to be back on track heading into its in-state stretch of matchups. Kentucky four-star center signee Malachi Moreno continues to improve as the top-ranked player in the state and will look to lead the Warhawks to a victory over No. 20 Madison Central on Friday, Jan. 10.

3. Covington Catholic

Covington Catholic picked up a monster 55-53 win over Cincinnati St. Xavier last time out and is now 10-4 this season, checking in at No. 3 in the state rankings. The Colonels have already played five games against other top-25 teams in the state, defeating Woodford County, Simon Kenton and Lloyd. They’ll look to stay hot this month with games against the likes of Montgomery County, Highlands and No. 25 Cooper.

4. Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass rounded out 2024 with perhaps the biggest win of the season in the state, besting No. 5 Bryan Station 72-64 to improve to 10-2 on the season. The Broncos have the best résumé thus far, defeating six top-25 teams already, including Henderson County, Ballard and Louisville Male, in addition to Station.

5. Bryan Station

Bryan Station, now 14-2, possesses one of the state’s top offenses thus far, having surpassed 80 points in a game six times already, including a 96-40 thrashing of Tates Creek last time out. The Defenders have already rebounded nicely from their loss to Frederick Douglass last month and will have a chance to avenge that defeat on Jan. 14, as they’ll once again square off against the Broncos.

6. Warren Central

Warren Central checks in at 12-1 overall and is just outside of the On3 Composite top 300 nationally. A 13-point win over ranked Louisville Male right after Christmas has been the biggest victory of the season thus far. Warren will look to extend its winning streak to nine games on Jan. 10 when it takes on Greenwood.

7. Marshall County

Over in Benton, Marshall County remains undefeated at 16-0. Headlining the impressive streak thus far is a 5-point win over No. 16 South Oldham and a 9-point victory over No. 11 Ballard last month. Next week will bring a tough test as Marshall heads to Murray to take on No. 13 Calloway County.

8. Dupont Manual

Another top program out of Louisville, Dupont Manual is now 12-3 and ranks as the No. 400 program in the nation, per the On3 Composite. The Crimson have three ranked victories under their belt thus far, two of which have come over No. 24 Pleasure Ridge Park. The rest of Dupont’s January slate features just one opponent with a winning record.

9. Louisville Male

Now 11-4 on the year, Louisville Male has already taken on a plethora of top programs in the Bluegrass. Wins over Calloway County, Woodford County and out-of-state Oxford (Ala.) highlight the Bulldogs’ 2024-25 campaign to this point. They are set to host Jeffersontown MCA on Friday, Jan. 10, though big games against No. 1 St. Xavier and No. 2 Great Crossing later this month loom large.

10. George Rogers Clark

George Rogers Clark won its first eight games of the season, averaging 71.125 points per game. The Cardinals then lost two of their next three, but rebounded in a big way last week by snatching a 5-point win over No. 25 Cooper. GRC has an opportunity to avenge a loss to No. 17 Woodford County on Saturday as the pair will meet once more this season.
